Have had iPad 1 for a year and a half other than two months late last year. At no time have I ever gotten a message saying I was close to exhausting my data usage but I just got a notification today that I was getting close. My usage of the iPad has not changed one iota but the thing that has changed is installing iOS5, which not only has rendered my iPad 1 ridiculously slow but also seemingly is hogging data.

Any idea what can be causing this sudden surge of data?

Try these:

1
Go to Settings > iCloud > Documents & Data
Turn of the "Use Cellular" option.

That alone caused me to nearly max out my data.

2
Go to Settings > General > About > Diagnostics & Usage
Check off "Don't Send"

That's one should also help, but not nearly as much as the first one.

3
Go to Settings > Location Services
All of the apps on this list are transmitting location information. BUT you don't necessarily derive a desired benefit from all of them. Switch off the location services of any app you don't derive any real benefit from. Ya know, like, why the hell would I want the IMDB app to know where I am?
