Im trying to find a IM program like MSN or yahoo that uses data instead using up a text. Also would it let me know I have a new message when the phone is locked like basic texts do?
    Thanks

If im not mistaking, all the IM applications on the iPhone use data, a regular cell phone uses it as text messages because most people don't want to pay like 15 a month for some little browser.

Also, if the application has push set up, then yes you can receive a notification that you have a new message waiting. You just have to make sure push is turned on for that application.

    Hope that helps

BUT I think that the "push" count as a text message, but not sure.

No, push notifications are not text messages.
