You have chosen.....poorly. :D
Nowt to do with me! ;) I'd have kept with baseball myself – I have no love of the game but it seems that Hull-based teams do quite well at it. Shamefully, I must admit to having misread the championship table when I said that we'd won the title in 1937. It seems a Hull side also finished top in 1964, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1970, 1972, 1985, 1993, 1994 and 1995 as well. Seems we're quite ace at it! :D ;)

very interesting article.

i am sure it's going to be good for MLS.
now hopefully a few other good players will follow. Ronaldo would be good, but he seems to be heading back to Milan (with AC this time).

How grotesque. It's an obscene amount of money to pay somebody to kick a ball around an open field. I'm sure his has been wife is spending it before it makes the bank account too. I think it's disgusting.

you might be right, but there are tens of athletes in the US alone that make significantly more then will do, and the same with tons of other jobs.
Is there any job that actually warrants a salary of millions a year?

Well, David's new best friend Tom Cruise got a mention earlier in the thread... how much does he earn from making a movie? A quick Google reveals he apparently earned $75 million from Mission: Impossible 2 – all that for a few months work and no one seems to question that.

I do think that the wages some of the top players on have reached silly money level, but the again if people are prepared to pay that money then no player is going to negotiate a pay cut, are they?

There's also the matter of Beckham being used as a merchandising tool. He's a very marketable figure, and Manchester United, Real Madrid and the English national side have profited handsomely from merchandise bearing his image – and I've no doubt that LA Galaxy will do quite nicely out of it too. Surely he's entitled to a share of this – if it was my face on the lunchboxes and pencil cases I'd like a cut of the profits, thank you very much.

Depends on what you mean by "warrants". Do they deserve it based on the amount of work they do? Probably not. Do they deserve it based on how much money they make for their employer? In the case of entertainers, over the long run, yes. Ultimately professional athletes are just entertainers who specialize in sports. Fans consider the top leagues much more worthy of their attention than the lower ones, so they'll pay more to watch the games. Compared to the size of their audience, there really aren't that many top entertainers that can make their respective businesses a lot of profits, therefore those few entertainers are paid accordingly.

It's not necessarily fair, but if you don't watch or buy products from their sponsors, you can console yourself in knowing that overpaid person isn't costing you. Unless your U.S. city/county/state has used tax money to pay for a team's new stadium, in which case you're screwed.

i totally agree. that was exactly my point (in contrast to bern).
in a market economy, it's about how much 'value' you bring to the company (in a broad sense) and how unique are your contributions.
I am sure MLS crunched their numbers and they see this as a valuable investment.

Lord Blackadder's Link said:
Britain's Daily Star newspaper reports that the wife of football star David Beckham has apparently been lined up to play the alien bride in The Thetan... Cruise - who is bankrolling the project himself after it was rejected by all the major film studios - is said to have picked Victoria for the role after being impressed by her "comic genius".
The Daily Star isn't exactly the height of journalistic accuracy – still, if the reports are true it's not surprising that the film didn't get the backing of a major studio. I'm sure Posh can put all the acting skills she learnt making the Spice Girls Movie to good use, though. :D

This makes me markedly less excited about having the Beckhams in California. I try to be a accepting person, but Scientology is pretty low on my list of reasonable world views that I can tolerate, let alone respect.

Anyways, back to soccer... The article about how the Beckham deal went down was really interesting. Here in Denver, Anschutz has built an incredible facility for the Rapids. My son will be going to a soccer academy there later this year and I'm really excited to check out all the playing fields attached to the facility. It's going to be a great venue for both professional and recreational soccer.

Just out of interest, which country is it you live in kristiano?

Baseball has been mentioned quite bit in recent posts, and us UKish types not getting it – it actually used to be a very popular sport over here, believe it or not. We had a flourishing league leading up to the Second World War – in fact, a lot of football teams had baseball clubs attached to them, including aloofman's adopted Tottenham Hotspur. Hull's team won the championship in 1937. :D

Singapore. This country used to be as nuts over Beckham as Japan.

Sorry to revive an old thread...

Victoria Beckham wins US TV deal

Ex-Spice Girl Victoria Beckham is to star in a fly-on-the-wall documentary about her forthcoming move to the US after signing a £10m deal with NBC.

The programme will "look inside her world", her spokeswoman confirmed, but will not feature her footballer husband David, or their three sons.

...

She said it was a decision which had been "thought about carefully".

"I'm really looking forward to making new friends and enjoying the sunshine in California," she wrote on her website.

Beckham's spokeswoman said that the precise details of the series were still to be finalised, and gave no timescale for transmission.

Er...why?

It will not include David or her children, but will 'look inside her world.' So it'll be a programme about shopping and eating lunch with Elton John?

Riveting TV. ( )

And so the rot begins....

God I hope the rumors about Robbie Fowler coming to MLS turn out to be true...for one thing he won't bring a Posh with him, and for another he doesn't know TomKat.
