Must be a matter of taste. I like him a lot better than the "safer" comedians like Leno or Fallon. Dave's persona has always been the kind of goofy kid in class who became popular because he's such a wiseass. It's served him well. Late night TV is gonna be a lot more bland when he's gone.
CBS said Thursday announced that Stephen Colbert will succeed David Letterman as the host of THE LATE SHOW, effective when Mr. Letterman retires from the broadcast.
The five-year agreement between CBS and Colbert was announced by Leslie Moonves, President and CEO, CBS Corporation, and Nina Tassler, Chairman of CBS Entertainment.

Added Tassler: “Stephen is a multi-talented and respected host, writer, producer, satirist and comedian who blazes a trail of thought-provoking conversation, humor and innovation with everything he touches. He is a presence on every stage, with interests and notable accomplishments across a wide spectrum of entertainment, politics, publishing and music. We welcome Stephen to CBS with great pride and excitement, and look forward to introducing him to our network television viewers in late night.”
The producers and the location for the Colbert-hosted Late Show will be determined and announced at a later date. The premiere date will be announced after Letterman determines his final broadcast.

He will have to drop the character and be himself. This is interesting. I wonder how he will change from The Colbert Report.

This is what I am wondering, are they expecting the character to host the show? It's strange to me that they are essentially hiring a Comedy Central character, as that actual Steve Colbert is a pretty regular, Catholic religious ed teacher guy.

Most of his character will have to survive. That is what made him famous.
I expect the parodying as a conservative pundit will be dropped, but his persona and how he acts will probably survive.
He has a new show on HBO starting this month I think.

How long was this in the works, Letterman announced a week ago. This is either a quick decision or this was in the planning for some time.He won't be doing his character. Go to youtube and find old clips of him from The Daily Show or Upright Citizens Brigade. He's also an excellent interviewer. The dude is the most talented guy in late night.
Ballsy move on CBS' part.

He has a house band, they are just shy.Good for Ferguson !! He deserves it. Maybe he can get a real house band now.
I think this was planned.
Colberts contract ends right around the time Letterman's ends.
Jon Stewart for the new host of Late Show with Jon Stewart.
