All I have to say its about freakin time! What is he, 108 years old now? People actually found this guy funny? I've never found him funny ever. He was lame, cheesy and often times rude.

Must be a matter of taste. I like him a lot better than the "safer" comedians like Leno or Fallon. Dave's persona has always been the kind of goofy kid in class who became popular because he's such a wiseass. It's served him well. Late night TV is gonna be a lot more bland when he's gone.

I did watch Letterman, but switched to Fallon after he started his late night show.

Yup, that's what made him stand out from the others. I found Leno rather boring to be honest.

Stephen Colbert has been named the new host of the Late Show.
CBS said Thursday announced that Stephen Colbert will succeed David Letterman as the host of THE LATE SHOW, effective when Mr. Letterman retires from the broadcast.
The five-year agreement between CBS and Colbert was announced by Leslie Moonves, President and CEO, CBS Corporation, and Nina Tassler, Chairman of CBS Entertainment.
"Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television,” Moonves said. “David Letterman’s legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and today’s announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night.”
Added Tassler: “Stephen is a multi-talented and respected host, writer, producer, satirist and comedian who blazes a trail of thought-provoking conversation, humor and innovation with everything he touches. He is a presence on every stage, with interests and notable accomplishments across a wide spectrum of entertainment, politics, publishing and music. We welcome Stephen to CBS with great pride and excitement, and look forward to introducing him to our network television viewers in late night.”
The producers and the location for the Colbert-hosted Late Show will be determined and announced at a later date. The premiere date will be announced after Letterman determines his final broadcast.

Good for him. He's an excellent interviewer and is very funny. I will miss his show and character though.

This is what I am wondering, are they expecting the character to host the show?

Most of his character will have to survive. That is what made him famous.

I expect the parodying as a conservative pundit will be dropped, but his persona and how he acts will probably survive.

This. It would be as if a pundit left politics for entertainment. I think what makes Colbert Colbert will remain (He honestly has somewhat outgrown the Bill O'Reilly knock off at this point)

I hope in all the shuffling, this guy gets on Comedy Central (I prefer him to John Stewart)

He won't be doing his character. Go to youtube and find old clips of him from The Daily Show or Upright Citizens Brigade. He's also an excellent interviewer. The dude is the most talented guy in late night.

Ballsy move on CBS' part.

How long was this in the works, Letterman announced a week ago. This is either a quick decision or this was in the planning for some time.

A clause in Ferguson’s contract with the network automatically awards the “Late Late Show” host a payday of at least $8 million if someone else is signed as Letterman’s replacement, sources told the Daily News.

Good for Ferguson !! He deserves it. Maybe he can get a real house band now.

:D

I think this was planned.

Colberts contract ends right around the time Letterman's ends.
He has a house band, they are just shy.:D

Though I like Colbert, I wondered at first if he was the best guy for the job. Then I thought about it.

Colbert comes from The Daily Show, where correspondents have mastered the art of subtly mocking the people they are interviewing.

Though most of Letterman's "mocking" of guests is good-natured joshing, he has been known at times to have a cutting edge with people who deserve it.

Just ask Rush Limbaugh. If you recall, he said something like, "Hillary Clinton looks like a Pontiac hood ornament," to which Dave replied, "And you can say that because you're the finest-looking male specimen ever."

If they're going for someone in the same vein as Dave, I think Stephen will fit the bill nicely, thank you.

Jon Stewart for the new host of Late Show with Jon Stewart.

I agree with that choice.

I was not happy to hear Stewart got passed over in favor of Colbert.

Colbert is funny. But I wonder if he's going to drop the character and just be himself — which I'd frankly find refreshing.

But I wish it were Jon.

:(
