Anyone here use Resolve on their M1s? I haven't used it on anything other than a surface and M1 max so not sure if this is common due to hardware limitations or is something that would occur with any other setup in the same price range. but playback goes from 30FPS to 2-3 when I try to use Spatial Noise Reduction or Magic Masks with more than a handful of strokes. Also temps shoot up from 50C to almost 90C. This is with 2.7k mavic footage. Just was curious because I saw a few "hands on / real life" reviews with Resolve and these M1s prior to purchase and all of them were praising how well the M1s handled up to 8k footage without any hiccups..

I understand NR and Masks are pretty intensive but figured it'd be able to at least handle it at 2.7k?

Hi CS,

I am using 16" M1 Max, 32 Core, 64 GB with Davinci Resolve. I think it handles UHD 4.2.0 quite well and in general no spin up of the fans on a 6 minute render.

That said, yesterday I did render on a 6 minute UHD 4.2.0 that had numerous masks (not Magic Mask). Scubbing through the video was not an issue. Export time was 1 minute 40 seconds. About half way through the export the fans did spin up to about 3000 RPM as temperatures rose to 100C. I am assuming the masks were what made the temperature rise during rendering

I was encouraged enough by this result to purchase Resolve Studio so that I could attempt using Magic Masks as it might make my workflow easier. But after reading your comments, I am not so certain.

Update. I tried again and looked better at iStat. Render was 3 minutes 2 seconds. Peak temperature on the GPUs were 94-96C and the CPUs 88 - 91C. Fans maxed out at about 2000 RPM. Barely noticeable from a noise standpoint. Laptop got moderately warm on the base.

Thanks for the datapoint, I'm more focused on real time scrubbing / editing and not so much rendering, as I can just set that and go do something else (don't mind waiting at the end).

I've recently purchased the studio version and for the price, I don't regret it one bit... I think the issues I'm facing are more of a hardware issue than software (but I'll wait for more datapoints). Nonetheless the NR and Lens Corrections alone were enough for me to pull the trigger on the Studio. If you're still on the edge, I know B&H has the studio version bundled with a Speed Editor for basically free (same price as the studio alone) which also helped with my decision.

EDIT: I also did notice when I was using the non-Studio (free version) that I wasn't getting 100% smooth playback and actually dropped frames on some higher 120FPS footage. But once I switched to the Studio version the issue never came up again.

NR will test the very best machines, being Mac or PC.
That's a bit relieving to hear. Is there anything I can do to smooth playback a bit? will optimized media work in this instance? or is it something that I just have to leave NR for the very last workflow prior to rendering?

If playback is an issue, just disable the NR LUT once you've done the noise reduction and continue editing.
Just remember to enable it again when you come to render it (and NR will slow down the render).

Hi CS,

I purchased the DRS bundle from B&H yesterday. Should arrive on Wednesday. Looking forward to see if there are any improvements with Studio. BTW. How did the Speed Editor work out for you?

Genius! is there a way to re-enable all disabled nodes prior to render or do I need to go through each clip?

To be 100% honest I haven't used the Speed Editor at all yet since I've been traveling since I made the purchased. But I've watched a ton of videos on it prior to ordering and it seems pretty intuitive and a great addition to any stationary workflow

Looks like it might be a mac issue with Spatial NR, as this test is getting similar results

Hi CS,

I upgraded to Davinci Resolve Studio 17.4.3 for use with 4K UHD HEVC 4.2.0 video clips. My goal in purchasing Studio was access to Magic Masks to improve my workflow.

Several geometric masks work great. Unfortunately, with only 1 stroke Magic Masks, playback slows to a crawl. Looks like the M1 Max 32 Bit GPU 64 GB ram does not have enough processing power to work well with Magic Masks as this is a extremely demanding application.

Maybe BMD needs to improve the algorithm or, the next iteration of AS will improve Magic Mask performance when scrubbing.
