Wow - DayOne went subscription! Glad to see that they maintain features of the old version for people who purchased it in the past! We all knew this was coming. I think the price is very good especially for those of us with 2.0 paid ($24.99).

I signed up. I use this app every day and I've been a heavy photo uploader. As a programmer - knew they'd have to monetize the data storage using their cloud bandwidth sometime.

I wonder how everyone else is going to react.

Keep up the great work DayOne!!!! Looking forward to audio recordings and web access!

I love the app both iOS and macOS versions, upgraded them last year to version 2. I was worried about iCloud support going away but the proprietary sync works usually very well. It just does not work for me paying for it, I'd use iCloud which I already pay addition storage for several other apps as well. I don't expect this as future enhancement but would be much welcomed! For now syncing has gone away for me.

As for some strange behaviour, iPhone app does not lot me open my second journal, saying that I need to purchase premium subscription. Does not make sense to me. iPad app was updated and does not do that. Maybe a fix happened in between upgrades. I will keep an eye and I will check Mac app later on. Wondering too how other people experiences are after this latest updates.

I'm ok with the subscription model, I pay for Plex, YNAB, Apple Music but 50$ for a journaling app is too much. Just my opinion.

I know when I upgraded to premium the first thing it did was turn off syncing on all my devices. I thought that was a little strange. I added an entry to my Mac mini only to have it never appear on my iPhone and iPad. Checking the settings I see that Syncing was turned off - even on the Mac mini. lol. So after turning syncing on again on all my devices, I'm back to normal.

Because I already paid for Day One 2 - I got on the $24.99/year plan - looks like it is permanent too (iTunes shows resubscribe at $24.99 a year from now).

I agree, I'm REALLY tired of all these subscriptions. Everything has a subscription now. That said, not everything is negative.

Wow, there's already a forum thread on it. https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...ransitions-to-a-subscription-service.2054054/ - lol @ first 2 comments. Yeah this isn't good :p

I was going to comment about how sometimes subscription services CAN be cheaper or more economical - like Office 365 (5 licenses for $99/year).

As explained in the other thread, to me at least, this subscription model has an extremely low value coefficient. YMMV. This thread is a good reminder to take advantage of the encryption feature.

The syncing process may be encrypted, but if you use the desktop app, all your data is being stored in plain sight. I've contacted support about this and they seem to think that this is as it should be. The exact words were as follow:

"All of your data is stored locally. The passcode can be set to prevent access to viewing your data in the app itself.

The files and folders can be accessed without the app, yes. That is how the data is currently stored. We recommend using different user profiles if sharing a computer. You can also enable FireVault to encrypt all local data.

macOS and iOS have security measures before you even access Day One and we rely on these. Your data is as private as you need it to be. We recommend different user profiles if you share a computer. Each person can have a login and password. " (25/01/2019)

No thanks.
