Hello, I have used Gimp for about one year with no issues. I updated gimp to newer version 2.6 and now I can not get past errors.

Here is the scenario, then the supporting information;
- I updated gimp, then have 'The application gimp-2.6 quit unexpectedly' error
- X11 was up to date from the MAC side, so I updated to the latest version of X11 from Xquartz, then have same gimp error AND 'The application dbus-launch quit unexpectedly'.
- I removed both with AppZapper and loaded X11 from my Apple software disc with no improvement, I still have both errors.
- I tried an older version of Gimp and it did not work (no menu bar) and I think it was 2.4.7(?)

So with apple standard X11 and fresh install of gimp 2.6 I still am unable to start gimp. Nor will X11 open when I click the icon in apps folder.

Here are the logs and system configuration;

Note: I am not a Mac expert. I converted from PC to Mac about on year ago and have not worked 'under the hood' at all.

any ideas by chance?

dbus and GIMP quit unexpectedly - resolved

I learned more about tracking errors on the mac.

Using console I watched the error string in console.
Beginning with a restart of mac, gimp would error out before I ever did a thing.
Console showed me that a copy of gimp in the trash bin was trying to run so I emptied the trash and resolved that issue.

I then selected X11 to run and watched console. There was a problem with not having the correct library, so I app-zapped X11 with all related components. I then restarted mac and watched console.... no errors were noticed so I then loaded a fresh copy of X11 from XQuartz.

I started up X11 after the load and it opened and ran fine without error (though I ama sure I zapped it before, however might not have removed all compents)

I then restarted mac again (no real reason) and loaded a fresh copy of gimp (2.6.8). I selected gimp to run and.... it all worked fine.

So I guess the lesson learned for me:

  • Watch the console when problems arise.
  • Keep the trash can clean
  • Use app-zapper to remove all components (seems to help I think)
  • Verify there is nothing stuck running in the background by watching console after start-up.

So now I am back to gimping :D
