macOS dd command uncertainty

Hello, I am using dd command to make an image of my usb drive.
Ricks-Mac-mini😀esktop drck$ sudo dd if=/dev/disk4 of=myusb.img bs=1m
Password:
After I typed in my password, it just sits there for a long, long time. There is nothing on my USB nor in terminal shows no error but not any visable indiction that it is copying. So is it copying or what? Thanks.

Open the Activity Monitor.app and look at the Disk pane. You should see reads and writes for the 'dd' process, with the reads occurring at whatever speed is appropriate for your USB drive (depends on model, bus speed, etc.). If not, post a screenshot.

The dd command doesn't show a progress bar, don't worry.

I’d try opening another terminal and seeing if myusb.img is growing.

Also use rdisk and not disk in the pathname for faster speeds
