Is there a way to deactivate the side scrolling on a Magic Mouse? Maybe even a way to turn it on and off via a shortcut?

MagicPrefs will do the job for you. I work in Adobe a lot on a 27" screen and dislike the inadvertent horizontal scrolling that happens. MagicPrefs works great for this.

YES! That's exactly one of my issues. I do 90% of my editing in Lightroom and just switched to a Mac with a new screen for that. It's fabulous (and I even like LR5 coming from 3). Except for the filmstrip at the bottom zooming across the screen when touching the mouse the wrong way. I think I'll pick up a Wacom tablet eventually but still.
And it's also annoying how the screen "shakes" sideways when scrolling up and down in a browser.
So I'll definitely check out MagicPrefs.

Getting ever closer to having the machine optimized to my needs and preferences...
