My 2009 MacPro 4,1 (flashed to 5,1) and with an MSI RD560 video card died last night, after installing some small app update and specifying a new startup disk, switching from Mojave to a High Sierra disk. After hitting the restart button, the machine became completely non-responsive.
Have tried everything I can think of but no luck. Trying to reset the NVRAM I get no sound at all. The front light comes on and I can feel some air movement from the exhaust fan, so I think the power supply is OK (not really sure there).
Tried reinstalling the original Radion 5770, same result.

Sounds just like what happened to my 4,1/5,1 a couple of weeks ago.
Powers on, fans running and front power light on but refuses to boot chime.
I also tried all the normal routine fixes to no avail, so as of now it just sits on the floor under my desk.
I've since replaced it with another identical model.
Let us know if you find a solution.:(

What hack did you use to make it ID as a 5,1 model? Did it spoof serial at all, or ever? There’s a crop of recent issues with some Hackintosh machines on other forums that really seem suspect to being blacklisted for stolen/spoofed serials.

Any leds lit when you press the diagnostic button? Did you checked the troubleshooting chapter of the Apple Technician Guide?

Since you flashed the MP5,1 firmware, use the MP5,1 version of the guide. This is the most updated version that we know of:

First, thanks for the reply and help. I have been very busy trying to keep up with work using my old MBP, a late 2011 model with an SSD installed.
I can access the mid2010 Apple Technician guide you linked, in Safari, but I can't get it saved to disk as a PDF file. The simple stuff like this is very frustrating.
Because of the small screen on the MBP and my bad eyes I can't find a view that shows where the diagnostic switch is, and I will try to check for LEDs lit on the RAM tray while booting. That may take a few days as I am still scrambling to do everything on the old backup machine.
Thanks again for the help.
