A friend of mine just upgraded to the iPhone 6 from the Apple Store. He took the device home only to find out the battery was completely dead out of the box. On top of that, the iPhone had iOS 8.1 on it! Obviously the batter has been dead for quite some time. Is there a chance for any adverse effects on the battery since it was probably sitting dead for quite some time? Or will it be fine once he charges it up and starts using it?

He should be fine. As long as it's charging fine to full charge then not an issue. It's probably been sitting on the shelf for such a long time that it lost it's power.

When I purchased my 5s on Launch Day, it also had a dead battery. It had to be charged before it could even be activated. The battery was indeed bad and the phone was replaced. My advise is for your friend to keep an eye on it.

Device charged up like normal. Watching the first few cycles to see how the battery life plays out. Amazed to see the device was on 8.1 still. Unfortunately I told him not to update to 8.4 due to battery life issues those users are having but he wants to use Apple Watch so he has no choice.

Doesn't seem like many people are having battery (or other) issues with iOS 8.4 (at least no more than usual with basically any update).

I'm surprised to see how some are affected by the 8.4 battery life. Because I have 8.4 installed on my 6 Plus and have a great battery life. Used iphone for 10 hours and my battery is still at 50%.

10 hour usage time being displayed in iOS, or 10 hours since disconnecting it from the charger? Just curious.
