Sorry to hear about your problem.
If you had a surge protector AT ALL, most will warranty anything that was connected to it.
Did you register your surge protector or keep your receipt?
If you have homeowners insurance, they should cover you less any deductables and may ask if you had a surge protector inline.
They may not give you a final decision until you get a response from the surge protector's manufacturer.
I lost a heat pump and $1200 worth of FX rack gear
to a lightening storm power surge that was protected by double commercial surge protectors.
Unfortunately, they were given to me by a friend
so filing a claim against the surge protector manufacture was not an option.
My insurance covered the heat pump and I still need to get the damage to my rack certified.
You're actually lucky that Apple has diagnosed your problem.
I'm getting a whole house surge protector installed by my local utility for $4.00 a month which covers
$1000.00 of damage to any connected gear.
I also plan to buy a decent UPS box to help control
line voltage.
If you had to buy a mini as an immediate business
holdover, you're insurance may cover that expense
too.
I would certainly give it a shot
