I had the same problem.

I would restore, etc.. reboot the ipod, all those things.

When it would come up to select the language, it would not accept any input from me other then rebooting it.

I read all over the place, didn't find anything to help.

Finally...

I held the ipod in my right hand, holding the screen side with screen facing up.
Then I slapped it on my leg, like a whipping/flipping action.

Next thing I know, everything worked again!

I can't believe it, but this worked for me as well!! My Nano 4G is now once again functional. Thank you. :)
This seems like something Apple needs to address......and not by simply recommending slapping it against your knee. :p

Ok so this is moderately old thread but its the only one like it I can find. People posted a fix for the click wheel problem which I cannot get to work. I have a blue 2nd gen nano.

I tried hitting it on my knee which didn't work. Can anyone be more specific? How hard? How many times? What place?

This seems really strange to me. Thanks for any help.

another dead iPod?

Hi,

I have a first generation Ipod Nano 2GB and the buttons have stopped responding. I've reset it holding menu select (which is strange seeing as the buttons seem to not be responding any other time) and when that didn't fix the problem, I restored it via computer. Still nothing.

As mentioned, the buttons are responding when doing a soft reset, however don't respond any other time.

The screen i am stuck on now is the language selection screen, which appeared after my hard reset.

I've pretty much tried everything possible that I was able to find on the internet. ie.
-Soft Reset
-Hard Reset (Restore)
-Toggle the hold switch
-Even tried the Bit' 'er leg slap.

Nothing has worked so far...

dead frozen ipod

Hi
I recently had problems with my ipod nano, it was frozen nothing would work stuck on language bar, wheel unresponsive etc. I came across a previous forum prob from a few years ago that Quoted

"I know this topic might be old, but this recently happened to my friends ipod nano, and it wouldn't turn on and obviously the click wheel was disabled. Seeing I am a "computer geek," according to him he asked me to fix it.
At first i thought it was Firmware, so I backed up all his music and restored it. That didn't work.
So I browsed the internet for ideas and game along this forum and various other sites that had majority of the same ideas. I didn't want to open it up because it wasn't my ipod, like one site says to do. So at school i popped the cap off the hold switch, with my finger nail, or you could use a pen. I got something sharp like a pin, pen or a paper clip and moved the switch into the off position and then clipped the cap back onto the switch. The ipod now works fine, the hold switch still works and I didn't have to open it. Just flick off a flimsy cap and then put it back on."

I tried this initially and it didnt work, but when i tried again i put the pin a bit further into the hold switch and moved it to the off position (felt like it had clicked over) and would you believe it, it worked.
No need to take ipod apart!

Hope this helps as I know how frustating this is!

*DEAD iPod Nano* Help!

I have a 1GB 1st generation ipod. I tried to hit it on my knee and I tried the tape. I tried to restart it through restoration and the menu and select key. I got the hold piece out and used a paper clip to switch it off and on and that did not work either. If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know! Thank you.

My ipod is frozen on. It won't do anything. I try to push the rotary button but nothing happens...Try sticking it back on the dock and it just stays ON...The screen is frozen with one of the menus showing....Just frozen. There is no way to restart or shut it down. Is there some way to reset this thing? Everything I try returns negative results...nothing...just frozen. What can I do? It did not get wet, I did not drop it, nothing out of the ordinary. Just ipod nano frozen up on me for some reason.

Is there hope here?

Thanks in advance!

Funny, not only is the thread old, but since I sign petitions, my email inbox is swamped with political and causes email, so it takes awhile to weed through them, the viagra spam, & Angie's list offers to even find real email.

Mine didn't come with a standalone dock, just the cord. This ipod is still sitting in the box, sent back from iResQ.com. They said there was moisture damage, common when people wear ipods to the gym or exercising and wear them on the arm. The entire board would have to be redone. This ipod nano is waiting for the next electronics recycling event. But thanks for the thought, hope yours is working better :)

I tried all the possible solutions but nothing worked for me then i saw the post that suggest "slapping it on the leg", i laughed :D but tried it anyway out of desperation and viola! I was out of the language screen and it started playing. The "slapping" didn't really fixed everything, it just got me out of the language screen. There is still no response when i press any of the buttons.

I have a 16GB Nano 4G that had the same problem up to a few minutes ago.
I had thought it may be a bad connection but holding Menu+Select was resetting it so it couldn't be.

Out of desperation I followed your instructions...

It worked! :D

Xajen, you should apply for a job at Mac. :)

I know this is old, but...Try connecting to computer, access disk utilities, then select iPod on left, then use first aid option. Worked for me, good luck!!
