I have a 1TB 970 EVO that I installed in an OWC Envoy Express enclosure that has suddenly gone dead (both purchased several years ago). It has had very little use, and had only about 30GB of data on it. It ran hot (to touch), which I read is not un-normal. This was on a 2019 MBP running Monterey, and there was no warning of any problems at all with this drive - it just suddenly is flat dead. I tried on a second computer, no joy.

Now, is there any way to tell if it's the enclosure or the card that's gone bad without doing a lot of hardware testing? I don't have another enclosure available or I'd try that. This enclosure has the USB cable attached internal to the case, and it looks like it might be carefully replaced, but I don't want to try that unless a bum cable is an option.

Got lucky. OWC contacted me and asked that I print out a system report with the dead drive plugged in. OK, so I plugged the drive in and CAZART! - it works! I suspect what happened is that just before I screwed the case back together I fiddled with the USB cable to see how hard it would be to replace if that became something to try. I pulled it slightly loose (it probably comes all the way out with a little effort, but I didn't try) and pushed it back in. Fool that I am I didn't immediately try the drive to see if that helped. Well, it probably did.

So, moral of the story with the OWC Envoy Express enclosure is that if it appears to be dead try opening it up and tightening the fit of the cable.

This guy reported a problem that might be relevant for you:

Also, there was a hardware problem with Envoy Express enclosures. There is a support article on OWC's website:
