one data point hardly tells anything.

"mine works fine" most definitely doesn't mean "all lcds work fine."

when dopefiend said "all lcds in general," he meant dead pixels affect all sorts of lcds, regardless of brands. he didn't literally mean "all" lcds will have dead pixels.

btw, dell, apple, ibm, viewsonic, whatever, they all get the LCDs from finite number of suppliers. none of them make their own LCDs.

Yes i know. For viewsonic thing I ment to write "the company that makes viewsonic screens have figured out a way"

it doesn't PROVE, but it TELLS something. pc users don't even discuss about this issue, because it's a lot smaller issue out there in the windows wonderland.

Or, maybe Windows users are so used to being screwed by their machine that a few dead pixels fly below their annoyance radar. Mac users are used to everything working, so perhaps we're more picky.

My $0.02

My first powerbook was a Ti 550, and it had a stuck blue pixel near the middle to upper left quadrant of the screen. First I called up MacZone or whatever company it was that I bought it from saying I wanted to return it. They wouldn't let me. They said, we don't accept returns on Apple computers, and that's the bottom line. So I called up Apple, and they gave me a similar story, saying they would not replace the PB or LCD.

What was frustrating is that no one else I know seems to have a dead/stuck pixel. Our company had about a dozen Ti powerbooks, none of them with pixel anomalies. My friends had Dells, Thinkpads and powerbooks with no problems.

I eventually got my hands on a non-booting Ti 667's LCD screen, and did an LCD transplant. It was messy, but eventually it worked. I can't tell you how much of a relief and difference it made just to not have one stuck pixel in the viewing area. It was worth the hassle.

Recently, I just got my new powerbook 15" 1.5ghz. And, it has a stuck green pixel in the lower right corner of the screen (about 1" up and 1" over) Because it was a custom BTO from Apple, I was told there is no way I can return it. However, I've noticed the location of this pixel is far more acceptable, as it is in an "non-vital" area of the screen.

Like before, my friends that bought new Aluminum PBs have 0 pixel problems, but they do have white spots (earlier models)

I guess what I'm saying is that there are many powerbook owners who have no problems with their LCDs, and then there are the unlucky folks like me who are 0/2 for having a perfect screen. It also makes a difference where the pixel is on the screen - almost exponentially a problem the closer it gets to the middle.

In other words, I love my PB, and can live with a stuck green pixel on the bottom right corner.

:p

Kinda an interesting aside about quality

When I was buying my Hammerhead, the forums were rife with "dead-pixels woes". I asked an Apple rep at Shinjuku BicBic about dead-pixels and he just laughed (not sure if I was getting the sales line), and said Apple Japan, because Japanese people are very quality sensitive, only ships perfect LCD screens. I have a Pismo (perfect screen), a Hammerhead (perfect screen), my friend has a some Apple studio lcds (perfect) and at work we received over 50 LCDs from Sharp and Eizo... not a single dead-pixel. If you worry about dead pixels, come and buy your LCD in Japan!
