I feel like I wouldn’t buy a new Mac without 16gb of ram at this point. My 2015 MacBook Air has 4gb and I think that’s the biggest reason it feels too slow. I wish I could simply upgrade the ram rather than having to buy a whole new machine.
Agree, 8GB on the base pro model is a pitty
Let’s not even talk about 128GB of SSD :(

I upgraded my 2010 MBA by purchasing an upgraded logic board off eBay for $55. Maybe you could find an 8GB logic board for a reasonable price for you 2015 model. Took less than an hour to swap.

Apple is not doing itself any favors with absurd discounts. As was noted, I would expect 16 GB of RAM. Any SSD space is extraordinarily limited. I've owned iMacs for years and would like to upgrade, but I will not. To get something decent, the cost would be about $2,500. I love the platform but costs are ludicrous.

I have a 99% hunch that you are absolutely correct. The number of friends and family whose computers I've fixed over the years by upgrading the RAM in them is in double figures. The typical complaint is, my computer is running too slow, does it have a virus? Quick check of RAM size and usage.... problem solved.

Unfortunately, Apple decided from around 2012 that it's laptops won't have that fix available.

People also wonder if they need to choose a faster CPU when they buy a new computer. The true answer in 99.9% of cases, is absolutely not, modern CPUs are super computers. Unless you are running world wide weather simulations, then forget it. Extra RAM? Yep! The only exception to this is when you have something like the new MBA, where you can upgrade from i3 to i5 for only $50. I doubt most people would notice the difference, but it's so cheap an upgrade, and you'll probably get most of it back when you sell it. But in general, I usually buy the base model CPU. So yes, if you can afford it, most definitely go for the 16GB.
