I wonder how much impact Affinity has on Adobe? Are they taking a significant chunk of revenue away from the rip-off Adobe subscriptions? I'm all for subscriptions when they're reasonable. The prices Adobe charges looks like they think everyone is a million dollar company.

Are you suggesting I "sideload" their apps on my Mac? Is that even safe to do? /s

🤣
:eek:Your Mac will implode and a sinkhole will show up with hands coming out, dragging you to hell! /s

What does Adobe standard do that PDF Expert doesn’t
Despite not being familar with PDF Expert, I'd say next to nothing! You'd think Adobe would have the best control over their file format, but after nearly 30yrs (and ubiquity thanks to ISO) it's ridiculous to pay for basic functions Acrobat steers you to sub for.

I dislike Adobe with a raging passion...whenever I need help from them. They have been useless with customer support. Good apps and powerful tools of course, and more often than not, they work well. But just a lot of dysfunction as a company. I use it professionally, and pay for it because of that, and in the grand scheme, that's ok. They should just provide some customer service. I can totally see how so many people want to use another tool if they aren't using it for work. It's expensive for occasional use.

Implying that half the actual "professionals" aren't just gonna pirate it at that rate. It's too expensive for pros or non-pros.
I'm not implying that at all.
Piracy can occur at all levels, professionals or hobbyists.

It may be still expensive for some, but for others, it's just the cost of doing business. It's all relative. If you're pulling in $200K annually, $600/year is a drop in the bucket.

Unfortunately competitors to After Effects still have a long way to go. Thankfully most Adobe users who make money from their work have their software paid for or written off. But I won't give Adobe any money myself without super strong reluctance so long as this is still a thing:

Two tiers for Acrobat? Higher prices for tiers without commitment is worse than porn subscriptions. Also, $13/m with a commitment should be a crime for PDF functions. Like I get that Adobe made the file format and want to steer CC sub adoption but come on. We should have legislation step in here!
It's only two tiers for Windows. Mac users can only get Pro.

Or you can pay 100.- for an universal license (Mac+iPad+Windows) of Affinity Designer/Photo/Publisher to replace Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop/InDesign if you only occasionally need to do design work and don't want to pay every month for a subscription. 😉💸 https://affinity.serif.com/
I was just about to suggest exactly this. Their version 2 of the Designer/Photo/Publisher suite is just out, and buying it is one of the true no-brainers of software.

Or, get this.

Of course it is not as robust as Adobe products and I'm sure that pros laugh at it. But it has been more than enough for my needs and it is non-subscription based.

All of their apps on all platforms for less than $100.
One need to define pro... but I work with Affinity suite, and do not miss a single feature of Adobe.

DO THIS! I mean, I'm personally biased against Adobe so me advocating not paying them money for any reason at all is pretty on-brand, but genuinely I love the Affinity suite and this price is absolutely stellar.

I am not an Adobe defender, but I do like their products a lot, and as I have been working within their ecosystem for years, will look to stay. Luckily enough my wife is a student, and as such we have been on the student discount model for years.

Every year they want to move the account of the student discount model, I chat with them. I explain that we have been loyal customers for years, and that my wife is still a PhD. student. Thus far they always have ended up letting us continue on the $15.99/month deal. IMO that is OK.

Be very carful with Adobe products. Very careful. It’s not like other subscription services. Read the fine print. If you cancel early you will have to pay an early cancellation fee. They are more like your phone company - except they have no legit reason to this - they are not providing you with any hardware in exchange.
Another issue with Adobe is that they are bloatware, and install all kind of installers.
Otherwise - some of their tools are admittedly best in class - but do look if you can find replacements.
The new Darkroom for instance is a good Lightroom replacement and integrates with Apple Photos.

Probably not much at this stage.

They need to get entrenched at the grass roots level…which means getting students in colleges and universities to start using them. At the same time, go after ad agencies and design studios.

It’s a long road ahead to challenge Adobe. But it’s doable. Look at Figma. They become the de facto standard for UX prototyping that Adobe’s response was to buy them out.

I have paid since the beginning for the whole lot. I get value from it as somebody who uses their tools for work but I can’t move as I need to open old files in InDesign. That is the worst possible walled garden, I need to keep paying until I retire. That irritates the hell out of me. I’ve been exporting IDML out of jobs so one day I can swap to Publisher or similar!
