The 32GB Apple TV 4K has dropped to $149.99 this week on Amazon, down from $179.00. To date, this is the best price we've ever seen on Amazon for this version of the 2021 Apple TV 4K, and it's in stock now with delivery as soon as this weekend for many places in the United States.

Bought mine at Best Buy for about that price or a little higher. It cost $200 because of taxes and the warranty. Great unit.

If this was a Playstation 5, it would rarely ever been found available at retail stores even after years from launch. I use my Apple TV with an Xbox controller and it delivers a pretty good experience. It is like a Nintendo Switch light and is available to purchase under retail. I don't understand the hate.

Totally agree. And seriously lacking features compared to the competition.
Mweh… one could argue about the price, but the good competition has a similar price. All the rest is Chinese rubbish that is EOL within 6 months. Running some half baked Android TV version that needs a nerd to configure properly.

My kids had no problem with our AppleTV from day one.

Generally, I agree that the AppleTV is worth the money (especially at a good discount like this). I don't use it in a way that more than 32GB is ever necessary and not even sure what drives the need for 64GB except maybe large games. We upgraded one unit last year and now use the old one as our "travel" one. My kid is a big fan of his Roku which I agree works well, although I still prefer the Apple interface.

I currently have 2 original 4K models, not this most recent version.

I wouldn't say they are missing features, the experience using the features is hit or miss. Things like the photo app not working without a reboot, same with the music app.

Some OS versions are better than others and it has always been that way, going back to the original black puck model. I've had them in multiple houses, with multiple networks, routers, etc. Some days works great, and is the best entertainment device I have, and other days an overpriced piece of junk.

Huh, what's missing? My home theater has shrunk over time from multiple devices and gadgets connected to a receiver (gaming console, DVD/Blu Ray, satellite box, etc) to just one: AppleTV.

Roku can’t connect to AirPods or use the apple apps such as music or photos.

nice! Just needs an additional $100 discount to make it somewhat worth it.

I left this Apple TV due to pricing and went with the Firestick. I bought 4 Firesticks and still saved money compared to this Apple TV nonsense. Oh and the Firestick OS puts this one to shame. It is simply much, much better.

I am not sure what features you are talking about, as most of the competitors are missing several major features also. That isn't to say Apple TV 4K is perfect, but aside from the price, it has more features than most.

Having said that, of top of my head, I do wish Apple TV has:
  • Full HDMI 2.1 support for improved gaming (Auto Low Latency Mode, Quick Frame Transport, and Variable Refresh Rate) and improved video viewing (Quick Media Switching and Source-Based Tone Mapping). As far as I am aware, none of the major streaming boxes offer these full HDMI 2.1 features.
  • Always On Siri like Amazon Fire TV Cube, and with on device processing for faster voice recognition.
  • Stick form factor with sub-$100 price point with lower storage and more basic remote control. But it should still have 4K.
  • Support for more codecs, such as AV1 and Dolby TrueHD, or at the very least, audio passthrough.
  • Better video upscaling engine, such as NVIDIA Shield.

I’ve never owned an Apple TV because I’ve never been short of other devices that could handle streaming services on my TV, so I’ve never particularly had a need.
But there are a few features that keep me interested. For example, the feature that takes eARC audio and sends it over AirPlay to other apple devices - wow; that’s really unique. Just putting an Apple TV in my A/V setup means I could theoretically get audio from any other source component beamed over to AirPods, or HomePods in another room. If/when the AirPods ever support lossless audio; that could be incredibly enticing.

I do however wish there was a USB port on the back or something so I could quickly plug in a USB drive and watch video files, browse photos, etc. as right now I have no easy solution for this.

Back in the day, the PS3 was incredibly great for this. Best multimedia device out there. But now it’s 2006 hardware that is not capable of handling modern codecs or 4K resolution.

The PS5 should be equally capable of this but it isn’t, the media playback capabilities are incredibly halfbaked. Modern Xbox isn’t much better. Anytime I want to watch something that’s not on Blu Ray or streaming (most recently, 4K77 - hello, May the 4th!) it turns into a 3 ring circus juggling act of trying to figure out which combination of hardware and software will actually recognize a file and let me press play. If Apple put a USB port on the back and made it “just work” that could be cool.

I am interested in the rumored Apple TV soundbar/webcam device too. That could be more interesting, particularly if it functions as a HomePod-like “always on” Siri device. Particularly I think it could be cool if it offered a passthrough function so that it’s interface and functions are always available regardless of which HDMI source is selected. In this way it would function much like a smart TV OS - just one you added on after the fact.

The Xbox One did something similar by adding an HDMI input intended for use with a Cable box. You were able to interact with and watch your cable box through the Xbox interface and control it via an Xbox controller. An Apple TV soundbar should be able to do this for many HDMI inputs. Imagine playing a PS5 game or watching Cable TV and getting a pop up from your HKSV doorbell cam that someone’s at the door? Could be cool.

The Apple TV platform has a lot of potential. But right now it seems like it exists mostly as a device to stream online content. And again… I couldn’t even count the amount of boxes I already have that do the same exact thing. Even a lot of TVs include the same features built in these days. So there’s really no need. If Apple focuses on making the Apple TV do unique things that no other device is currently offering then they will become more of a must-have device for many people in the market.

All you’re doing is steaming Netflix. Expect more from your tech. EArc to HomePod speakers. Spatial audio to AirPods. Airplay. Homekit notifications on screen. More fluid, swipeable OS. Etc. etc.
