I’d get an 8 TB at Costco for $200 and plug it in to the Mac Mini for storage. But what do you do for RAM? You pay up. And that blows up the value on this machine.
What would recommend to add a TB or two to this Mini for storage?

8 TB SSD for $200? link?

the $499 price for the base M2 existed as a pre order price months ago, and $549 several times since.

If one is super strapped for $ but wants a mini -- refurb M1s from apple are the best deal. 16/256 = $620, 16/512 = $820, 16/1000 = $979.

Macs have never been about "value", not new news.

The Mac Minis used to make for great HTPCs. But only the M2 Pro has HDMI 2.1 - and a 10GbE M2 Pro is waaaay overpriced for what it is. I'll wait till HDMI 2.1 becomes standard across the Mac Mini line.
Yep...

I'm still kicking around the idea of a headless M2 Mini for use purely as a music source (with attached external HD/SSD, connected via USB to a DAC). I think it might still make sense for such a usage even as audiophile streaming devices seem to have taken over this space. I do not use any audio streaming services; all my music is 16-/24-bit ALAC.

FYI, B&H Photo
I am going to need an M2 Pro Mac mini in the next few months, but I think I might want 1TB of storage. Still, it is tempting since the discount effectively covers the Sales Tax.
FYI, B&H Photo today just lowered the price on some of the higher end Mac mini M2 Pro models, such as the 1TB SSD M2 Pro Mac mini model you mentioned for $1,399 down from $1,499. Today B&H had an open box 1TB M2 Pro Mac mini model for $1,299, but it already sold. They have $150 and $200 off some of the higher end Mac mini M2 Pro In Stock custom Mac mini models also. I today picked up from B&H a 2TB SSD, 12 CPU Core, M2 Pro Mac mini with 32GB RAM for $200 off ($2,499 instead of $2,699.) This is the first time B&H has lowered the price of any of their Mac mini M2 Pro models that I am aware of. Their M2 Mac mini models may also be on sale. Look on the B&H website tomorrow, as they just received 2 of my M2 Mac mini (non-pro) models which I returned back to them today, and will have them in their used department tomorrow or the next day at a substantial discount. They are Mac mini M2 models with 24GB RAM/256GB SSD and also 16GB RAM/512GB. Both should be in the $700 to $800 range, instead of the $999 list price for each. If you sign up for and use their Payboo Credit Card, B&H pays for your Sales Tax also (a big savings)!

I wish there were more standard configurations available for Macs. I know you can customised on Apple's website, but there's never discounts on their site like other retailers.

See my post right above yours. B&H today has In Stock with a discount some custom Mac mini M2 & M2 Pro configurations.

Earlier this month we tracked new all-time low prices on a few models of Apple's M2 Mac mini, and now Amazon has expanded its discounts to include the Mac mini with the M2 Pro chip. You can get the 512GB M2 Pro Mac mini for $1,099.99, down from $1,299.00.

Amazon estimates a delivery between April 21 and April 25 as of writing, and with this $199 markdown it's now the best price we've ever seen on the M2 Pro model of the 2023 Mac mini. As of now, only Amazon has this record low price.

Moving to the 256GB M2 Mac mini, you can get this model for $499.99, down from $599.00. This is still the best price we've ever tracked for this version of the computer, and delivery dates have now slipped into early May.

Additionally, the 512GB M2 Mac mini has dropped to $689.99, down from $799.00 on Amazon. This is another best-ever price for the new Mac mini, and delivery dates are available for early May as of writing.

Hmmm, even when eventually available as a refurb the M2 Pro base will probably only be 10% off at $1169.

As you noted, the iPhone's A17 SoC will likely eat up a significant portion of TSMC's initial 3nm production capacity even with Apple owning 100% of whatever TSMC can produce at 3nm. So I do not think we will see an M3 launch much before Q4 2023 at the earliest.
Apples strategy is to give each product time in the spotlight to shine. If any Apple product gets M3 this year, its the long overdue iMac.

This is likely how its gonna play out into 2024:

WWDC - 15 inch M2 MacBook Studio (I just don't think the Air branding is applicable to a 15 inch notebook).
WWDC - Mac Pro with M2 Ultra Preview, availability end of summer - here is the twist, Mac Studio gets the bump too
iPhone 2023 fall line up (Apple Watch too)
iMac with M3 October 2023

********************************

iPad Pro's with M3 March 2024 event, new iPhone spring colors
MacBook Air and MacBook Studio with M3 at 2024 WWDC
iPhone 2024 fall line up (Apple Watch too)
MacBook Pro M3 Pro/Max and iPad Air with M3 featuring OLED

*********************************
Mac Studio - M3 update March 2025
WWDC 2025 - Mac Pro gets new Apple silicon SKU - M3 Extreme

For the people who post here, for sure. For the other 95% of peeps... they never upgrade. Even with easy DIY stuff.

In the bigger picture though, it would make them more compelling and longer lasting overall, as you'd have people and companies upgrading them, refurbing them, reselling them..

The "eco" company should be making desktop computers that aren't straight "appliances" like this.

It would be a simply better product if it were more flexible and had more longevity

We discussed SSDs in the post before, seemed logical we were still discussing the same. 8 TB HDD is great for long storage, or even backup. The $200 price threw me, cause 8TB HDDs are $140ish, not $200.

You will get no argument from me. My 2015 27" iMac lasted for 5 years since it was DIY ram, and an upgradeable (althoguth not easy) PCIe drive. its now my backup mac, with 64 GB ram and 1 TB SSD.

But, as a mac consualtant for many many years -- i can tell you the number of macs that were brought to me with zero upgrades over stock, or the amount of times I was told "maybe later" to upgrades was huge.

Even now, with clients buying base M1s + external 1-2 TB SSDs... they run great... and they see no reason to upgrade in the foreseeable future

The recent impressive drop in Mac sales (due to high quality of the prior crop of Macs) will force Apple to think hard about next steps. It seems that the success of M(1, 2) SOCs precludes success of a simple "Hey, see, we got a faster mac!" sales pitch. Need to create a strong differentiating point, improve on what users desire. I would love to see more RAM options, larger SD capacities, built-in cellular, touch screen could be of value to a sector, ports, better cams. So there is some room there that can help M2-3 go still attract/justify new purchases. Otherwise, it can become stale for a bit of time until the next breakthrough meaning higher computational demands exceeding M2,3's capabilities to drive sales.
Apple is already crushing in laptop and small desktop market. The 40% drop in sales is a larger economy thing (see tech layoffs, especially in Silicon Valley where Macs are part of common office set up) coupled with strong US dollar. Not much Apple can do about that.

There are already decent RAM options and basically unlimited SSD sizes (I'd guess that less than 10% of any of their models are configured at the highest SSD size, so there isn't any meaningful constraint in storage going on there). Built in cellular is nearly useless since Apple's computers pair nearly flawlessly with the 5G iPhone in your pocket which has cellular for the rare cases one works outside of wifi range. So improving these options is not going to meaningful move sales.

Touch screen is a decision that Apple has made and moved on from. Better video cam is justified, but there is a limit to this one as basically none of us are "camera ready" to do our work calls at anything sharper than 1080p. Improvements can and should be made to bring the quality up. But there is a point where it is good enough for everyone except "performers" (performers meaning anyone who records themselves for public consumption, so I'm including influencers and even tech reviewers). Performers can set up their studio with better stuff if recording themselves for public consumption is part of their job.

There can be new sales by taking PC market share. But that is more of a software and price issue. The Mac lineup doesn't have to be better hardware to keep taking PC market share. It would help if it was cheaper though. The simple fix would be to drop the 8gb models and start all Macs with 16gb. I suspect that happens basically now. Prediction: Apple has announced its last 8gb RAM computer with the base Mac mini M2. All new Macs will start with at least 16gb of RAM.

I was looking to replace my parents 21.5" Late 2013 iMac - Model A1418 EMC 2638 since it can't run current (supported) versions of macOS. Its only used few times a month. The 8GB/256GB model might just be the ticket.

I see and mostly agree with your points, TallManNY. My whole idea was regarding other means of stimulating potential upgraders and switchers at this time without waiting for terrific hardware breakthroughs on the chip front. Most of what I listed are still quite actionable even in the light of your arguments. As long as a feature sells a Mac, it is a good feature. Cheers.

It’s a Seagate at Costco for $149.99, not $200. My mistake.

They do have an 18 TB for $289.99. I don’t know what I would do with 18 TB.

And like the M2 no one will buy them. It turns out nearly every person buying a computer today expects expandability
