Amazon this week has introduced a new all-time low price on the 32GB Apple TV HD that comes bundled with the new Siri Remote. This accessory is now priced at $124.98, down from $149.00, beating the previous low price from August by about $5 and marking the best price of the year.

This version is the same fourth generation Apple TV HD device that was released in 2015, but now it's bundled with the revamped Siri Remote. The new accessory features a one-piece aluminum body, tactile clickpad with five-way navigtation, and rearranged buttons.

The Apple TV HD is in stock now and ready to ship within 1-2 days, so you still have time to order it in time for Christmas delivery. You can also get the newer 32GB Apple TV 4K model delivered for Christmas, but its deal isn't as steep as the HD version, priced at $169.99, down from $179.00.

Is the silver remote worth the standalone price?

I don't really watch more than a few hours of TV a week, but the stuff I do watch is through a prior model 4K Apple TV, and my cable company's AppleTV app for live TV. I've got the prior model with the admittedly frustrating remote that sometimes gets held upside down, but I've got a red lightning cord plugged in to it from the couch, so it is readily found, and easy to pinpoint direction, but it is always plugged in.

The AppleTV remote built in to iPhone or Apple Watch might be the better solution anyway? At some point, I pause a live program, go off to do something, play again, but then hit with the two or three minutes of commercials. Using the traditional remote, its a pain... you've got to move the playback cursor up a random time, and real easy to slip, go too far, and if you've found yourself real close to the top of the hour, when a new show starts, CAN'T go back.

But the iphone/watch remote seems to have either 10s or 30s FFD buttons appear in app (differs from the Bell TV app and Amazon Prime app), so I can just go forward a little bit. Is that possible/easier with the newer physical remote?

Apple TV now available as an app on Skygo (main satellite provider in UK), don’t think I will be upgrading anytime soon.

I just received the 4K I got through the amazon deal. The remote is really an improvement. Other than that I can't tell a difference between the 1st and 2nd gen 4K, but I got the 2nd gen so I could move my first gen upstairs. Smart TVs are so much worse than these Apple TV boxes. $150 is well worth the price to never have to use a Smart TVs smart functions.

I don’t know the answer to your first question but have you considered taping a little bump to the top or bottom of the backside of your remote? That way you instantly know the up direction and won’t have to keep it plugged in which can’t be good for the battery.

I have a 65" Samsung curved 4K TV that I bought in 2018 and the software on that isn't too bad but when I bought my mom a first gen ATV 4K for an early Christmas gift and set it up for her I was so blown away by how fast and smooth it was compared to my built in stuff that I just had to get one for myself. I had never had any previous experience with an Apple TV before so I held off a very long time and I got one for her initially because her TV is from 2013 so a lot of apps on there no longer function and she was using a FIRST GEN Firestick which was so godawful it would often take 10-15 minutes to load apps or just crash outright and run really hot.

My TV feels like it's been brought to back to life with my ATV, I really wasn't using it much before and was instead watching content on my iMac or iPad. Highly recommend one to anyone on the fence. Both 4K versions are great and I have no complaints with either remote.

Agreed. My Roku's kick ass and cost me under $30, and I use Apple Airplay on them all the time.
Roku did something recently and my Streaming Stick + started both overheating (giving me thermal warnings) and making a horrible jarring noise when unpausing playback (I felt it was going to damage my sound system, honestly). Combine with the fact that it is at times pretty insane as far as device activity on the network goes (various telemetry and ads) - I replaced it with the new Apple TV 4K unit a few weeks ago (it was $93 from Apple directly).

I’m surprised they haven't discontinued the HD version. That will likely occur before long. No reason for them to update it to a newer version when the 4K version will work on HD TVs.

I prefer the remote bare, but after seeing pictures of people dropping their remote I got some of these glow-in-the-dark cases. The texture and buttons make it easy to tell how you are holding it but the glow is good enough that you can actually see it. I was worried it would glow too much but it has not been an issue for me.

Agreed Apple TV app, actually all apps I use, with Roku remote is great, both my 4K ATV's are ignored and Apple would have to bring out something unexpected to get me to upgrade them. I know privacy is fungible on Roku, I turned off the smart TV feature . As far as Roku and some apps know I'm a 85 year old woman who watches Tubi a lot and other apps that think I'm a 45 year old man. The algorithms have admitted defeat ?? Honestly I have lost trust in Apple's mantra about privacy anyway. That mantra was a major reason I dumped Alexa, Roku, and Google and put up with the frustrations of Apple only devices. Moving back to what works best for me.

I still use mine bought in 2015 and have bought 3 more over the years, not this same model, but the current model at the time of purchase. I love that my 2015 model has cascaded down the line of TV’s in my house, from the main living room tv now all the way down to the small tv in the play room. It was an expensive purchase at the time, but here we are 6 years later and is still bringing me value, and I think it will for at least a few more years. Which in the world of consumer electronics is obviously amazing and clearly part of the reason why Apple is approaching a $3T company.

All that being said — I am truly left scratching my head who this product is for today. Spend a bit more and get the 4K. The few extra dollars will absolutely result in literally extra years of usability.

If Apple wants to keep this old and outdated model around, they really need to at least make it $79-89 - max.

(Please don't mention the standalone remote cost - that thing is also an INCREDIBLE ripoff. They removed the accelerometer and glass trackpad, and seemed to cheap out on the IR component also...margin on that thing must be insane.)

I'm using one of these right now and frankly it's just fine. My projector is 1080p, so 4K would be wasted, though I suppose a snappier UI might be nice. I would also like Spatial Audio to go with my AirPods Max, which I using more and more these days to watch TV at night. But only the 4K ones support Spatial Audio -- am I right about that?

It's not about the 1080p part, it's the old ass processor and longevity of support (and snappy UI, and features like Spatial like you mentioned)

Just ridiculous they are trying to charge this much for such an old old box at this point

Yeah, I don’t know why some people say Roku is no good. It gets the job done and then some. I use my Roku much more than more than my Apple TV HD. Yeah, it may not have some of the bells and whistles that the latest Apple TV 4K has, but it’s far cheaper and let’s be honest, most Apple TV users only use it for streaming/AirPlay. True gaming console or even close, forget about it. In that respect, the Apple TV HD that I purchased six years ago is more than adequate for that despite the old A8. I have a feeling it will get at least another 2-3 years of updates. The price is still too high of course. Apple could easily sale it for $50-60 less. Maybe it’s time for a Apple TV 4K SE dongle with an A10 or A11 processor or the same processor that the HomePod mini has for $50-80.

A (tech literate but not savvy) friend of mine just accidentally bought this one instead of the 4K one. He was admittedly in a bit of a rush but still, the box looks the same from the front and the folks at the Best Buy he bought it from just handed it off to him.

I’d be unsurprised if Apple put the new remote in there partly so that the boxes looked almost identical.

Fair enough. I brought up the 1080p part just because I've had mine a few years and wouldn't see much benefit from updating to the 4K -- except as you say general snappiness and Spatial Audio (I'm actually talking myself into updating as we speak lol). But yeah, they probably should be fire sale-ing the HD ones out the door at this point.

Was the new remote by itself ever on discount? I have both the old and new Apple TV 4K and I hate having two different remotes.

For me, it's the ads on the remote, screen savers, and menus. My media player should never be promoting content I don't already have access to. If I want content discovery I will go into the store.

I can pay off a hardware cost, but the ads never go away. Once you factor in the ads Roku's cost infinitely more than an Apple TV.
