So many 8GB models to end up in trade-ins, pawnshops, and e-waste, once people realize that's not enough RAM for 90% of end users.
To add insult to injury, the little 256gb SSD will also be filled up as most end users don't clean up their storage. Plenty of son's classmates had full 128/256gb SSDs on their macbooks when brought to me for fixing or helping with an issue.
Meanwhile, M1's habit of swapping heavily will also shorten it's lifespan. You also can't boot a M1 computer with primary storage dead.

I agree Apple needs to be more long term friendly.
Some don’t worry about the recycling issues.
The whole 2-year renewal program from cellular companies are to blame and nobody stops them.
I have learned with my office looking like a Apple Mac graveyard they don't want any of their products living too long! Apple's strategic design, development, and distribution is all programed and factored to give users about 5 years of longevity of use :( :(
