Steep cut, one might think a replacement is on the way but.......

Anyone use one as a media server primarily? Would it be overkill for Plex with like 2-4 streams max?
I use an M1 Mac Mini with the OWC MiniStack (configured with 16tb WD Red Pro HDD) as a media and home server (email, web hosting, Plex, ipTV, HomeBridge and Homekit, etc). It is overkill for Plex, but.... its better than any NAS if you're deeply integrated into the Apple ecosystem. Worth every penny.

I use a M1 Mini as a Plex server and surveillance camera video recorder... I wouldn't say it's overkill at all, for the price it's ideal. Over the years I've piled on other services, so it's a BitWarden server along with a number of crontabs, Docker, web server, etc.

This is what happens when you don't pay the Intel tax .... good news for us consumers

Thanks for the reply. That ministack is pretty cool. Im currently using an old 2011 Mini with several attached externals for Plex only, and only 1080P streams. As I look towards the future with things being 4K HDR now I know my 2011 will likely not cut it.

Subjectively: I think you're well suited to upgrade if you're planning for the future. Always better to have the ability and not need it. I prefer overkill in my setups anyway, and its a great reason to have a Mac Mini in your lineup!

Objectively: the M1 is more power than necessary to transcode/encode 1-2 streams for Plex up to 4k @ 24.95fps & 128kbps audio. You can find certain Raspberry Pi machines for this that cost 1/5 of what the Mac Mini is. But you'll be hard pressed for it to do anything beyond that, and will need to upgrade quite often.

Good Luck!

That’s a great deal for basic use. I have one for just that purpose, and it’s been solid since November 2020. I haven’t had the Bluetooth issues others have had, but YMMV.

I am looking to set up a multi-purpose server like this as well. What camera systems and software do you use for the NVR?

Thanks,

I had a M1 Mac mini that I used headless for a while with my iPad Pro. I sold it mainly due to lack of use. Now that I have a desk setup for my iPad - with a mouse, keyboard and monitor; I’m tempted to get a Mac mini again. Even though it‘s a year and a half old, it seems like a decent price for it.
