This is the price point at which this machine should have been launched. A quality machine for every day users for under $1,000.

The base M2 Air is more computer than most normal people need (even with the 'slow' SSD and 'inadequate' 8GB RAM). I got one as a secondary machine, and frankly, it is amazing. For normal computing tasks, surfing w. lots of tabs, MS Office, casual photo and video editing, this thing flies. I can barely differentiate its performance vs. my M1Pro 14".

This is what the Marketing department comes up with before running it by the Engineering or Accounting departments ;).

I already have the M1 MBP from 2020, but I am seriously wondering if I should pick this up just for the value? I have too many computers already! This would be more of a want than a need.

A chrome book does that for $300. There is very little more this offers over a basic machine because it’s held back by 8GB of RAM. Great processor, but no way a $1000 computer with 8GB of ram is worth it. Don’t let people fool you, this will become a bottleneck sooner than you think.

I made the mistake of falling for the bUt OpTiMiZeD crap that the community spills On the OG iPad pro that shipped with 2GB, and guess what less than two years in and that product was nearly useless. The same will happen with 8GB as apps and webpages get heavier over time.

Do you have to pay an additional Sales tax in the US? Or is really just 999,-?
Yep in the US sales tax is not included in the price of anything usually. People from other countries always get a bit surprised when they bring their items up to the register and find out they cost more than expected.

And it's even a better deal for people in high sales tax states (10% in California), where using B&H's store credit card will result in that tax being rebated.
How does that work? Do you buy a gift card tax-free and then use it? 10% tax wow. In Texas it’s only 6.25% but cities want their piece of the pie so it ends up being over 7%

You’re not getting a Chromebook that matches the quality of the MacBook Air for $300. That’s just ridiculous. You can get a chrome book cheaper with almost the quality but it’s probably gonna cost you over $600. Oh by the way that Chromebook is going to have 8GB of RAM.

You can’t also compare 2GB to 8GB. If you do some quick math you’ll find out that 8GB is 4 times 2GB

You just apply for their credit card and start using it. Details on B&H's website.

No way. I’ve followed a lot of your posts where you are a voice of reason for keeping Mac computers as long as they’re useful, which is quite a long time nowadays! Your reasoning inspired me to (happily) keep my base M1 MBA.

Unless you travel a lot with a laptop I wouldn’t do it. They are so close in form factor so you’ll end up replacing the Pro with the Air rather than it doing something extra. If money is burning a hole in your pocket wait for the M2 iMac.

I go through these phases sometimes, but I get over it, I am not gonna buy it. Sticking to my original plan of keeping my M1 and keep using it until I am ready to upgrade again in late 2025.

A desktop Mac is indeed where my eyes is set on as an interim product I might get between now and 2025.

I have the base M2. I also have a 16GB M1Pro 14". This is not about people fooling me, I have hands on, real-world experience with both. What I can say is that the dis-information about the base M2 Air has gotten out of hand. The benchmark numbers bear little to no relevance on how the machine is to use.

The 8GB Ram is constantly pointed to as a bottleneck. Let me just say that there is literally nothing that you can do from a normal productivity perspective that will slow this machine down. MS Office, Chrome with a million tabs, Photo Editing, light video editing (i.e. short 1080p or 4K projects) all work like butter in a multitasking setting. If you're doing more than that then you might need more, but for people who just need a computer for computing or school, this will be amazing. And I've had $300 Chromebooks - it's not even close!

I'm blown away at how close it is to my M1Pro for daily computing work. It's a remarkable machine. That is not based on benchmarks - that is based on hands on, daily use for the past couple of months.

Not in normal use. The benchmarks tell you it is slower, and I am sure it is possible to devise a YouTube torture test to 'prove' how much slower it is, but if you're just doing normal computer stuff it's impossible to tell from the much faster SSD in my M1Pro.

This. I've got the 8GB/512GB SSD version; a friend has the base version. We've both done the same type of stuff - e.g., Chrome with a buncha tabs, light video/photo editing, browsing, music, etc., and not once have either of us hit any bottlenecks.

I agree with you! I have a mini m1, and a MacBook Air m2. they work fine! All base models. Because click bait YouTubers like Luke Mamon or what ever his name is tell you that they suck. 99 percent of Mac buys are perfectly fine with the base. Not everybody has 500 plus or more dollars to spend on an ultra maxed out model. I think today, with costs of food etc. rising in price, more important things your hard earned money can be spent on. These click bait YouTubers are making thousands of dollars to tell you how bad everything from Apple is.

Now I will recommend this laptop to more people, especially since the average user (Who this laptop is targeted to) needs a fast SSD.
