A chrome book does that for $300. There is very little more this offers over a basic machine because it’s held back by 8GB of RAM. Great processor, but no way a $1000 computer with 8GB of ram is worth it. Don’t let people fool you, this will become a bottleneck sooner than you think.

I made the mistake of falling for the bUt OpTiMiZeD crap that the community spills On the OG iPad pro that shipped with 2GB, and guess what less than two years in and that product was nearly useless. The same will happen with 8GB as apps and webpages get heavier over time.

I mean a lot of people are not gonna fork over $1000 for everyday use or as a "secondary" machine which can basically be equated with waste, not that I don't do it myself. I did however find a $600 m1 air with 2 years of apple care plus a so called "refurbished" unit from microcenter. Turns out to be an educational variant but as a "secondary/waste of money" machine I find it does its job.

Thing where you are wrong is the 8gb of ram. The 8gb of ram is not a problem for basic tasks like web surfing, it may slow down a bit but not within the next few years. It is a problem however for some games. For instance Victoria 3 will crash with less than 16gb ram. Activity monitor shows that the game actually uses 10gb of ram somehow which after a while causes a crash on 8gb system. Thing is even on this paltry m1 the game runs pretty decent considering the specs, better than a different 8gb model would. Oh yea a $300 Chromebook is gonna be garbage experience if you've ever used a MacBook or an iPad, in fact id suggest a 10.2 inch iPad would be superior to a Chromebook at around the same price, I tend to favor hi res screens though, especially for surfing the web.

Interesting. My OG iPad still gets daily use. Mostly as a Wacom-type drawing input device for presentations- but frequently picked up for other “regular tablet” type purposes too. I do have an upgraded version now as well - and it’s “primary”, as much for the magic keyboard as anything. But by NO means, do I consider the OG as paper-weight hardware.

I agree, an iPad would be better then a Chromebook, I tried to like them, almost got our oldest son one for high school but seems like you have to spend a fortune to get a decent built one

Looks like B&H is offering this deal again for any last minute shoppers out there. They are still guaranteeing Christmas delivery as of this morning.
