I think these deals is a sign why Apple will not rush out new Macs anytime soon. There seems to be a glut on the market right now topped with inflation. Most people are working with what they got. If I were Apple, I would wait until fall 2024 before updating any new Macs to M3.

Unless you are an average user, never buy the base model.
I agree, and the average user makes up a large segment of the laptop buying population. For example, a couple of my kids went through college with base model MBAs without a problem (International Relations and Business Majors). However, I can see how some students might need more computing power than the base model.

I use a base model M2 MBA for all of my business and personal computing....again, no problem for me. But, I am your typical user....nothing extraordinary.

If you are no tech savvy, and you see 8GB, immediately run like the wind, it's too low of a base.
Storage you can upgrade with external drives and USB Pen drives, memory cannot be upgraded in Apple Silicon, shoot for 16GB minimum unless ALL you want to do is web browsing and word processing.

In the real world, $200 ($300 upcharge - $100 CPU upcharge) will get you an external 4TB SSD.

That's nice.

The cost to go from 256GB to 512GB on a ThinkPad X1 is $224.
On a Dell Latitude 3540, it's $270.

So much for the 'real world'.

So pay $179.99 to be a Total Tech (now called My Best Buy Total) member so you can save $50

 I'm not seeing how that's a deal.
You also get Apple Care with My Best Buy Total. With my family of four who all use Apple products it is a good deal.

They don’t tell you they charge you $199 PER YEAR for Best Buy Total.
It’s not a one time $199, read the fine print.
It’s $199 A YEAR.
