Costco regularly has them at that price. I know you have to have a membership but if you do, watch for the deal. I usually check for it in store and then go online to order the color I want. I have purchased 4 that way at different times.
This. Costco literally selling it at this price right now with cheaper AppleCare and better returns.

Maybe better in a smaller space. I am a

I'm not comparing it to an echo dot either I have a cylindrical $100 (I think?) echo. Sounds tremendously better at the same price point.
My kitchen and living room are both pretty good sizes, and it think the HomePod mini is way better sounding.

I desperately wanted to go all homekit with a homepod, hoping it would sound better than my echo, but it sadly doesn't. I got a similar price at Target this past weekend, tried it out, and had to return it since it was so tinny sounding in comparison. :(

Maybe nice for a small space, but not good enough for my kitchen / open floor plan living area like my echo is.
The echo is twice the size of the HomePod mini so I wouldn't expect the mini to sound better, especially the bass. Price wise, the echo (4th gen) is a better deal since it is so much cheaper. The full size HomePod does have fantastic sound and really fills the room. I hope whatever new HomePod version Apple is planning comes close to the sound of the original.

Ugh just a couple of days ago I decided to buy 2 white minis through eBay’s official refurbished at $60 each, thinking I would risk it to save $80. I would have bought these at $80 each.

I have been hanging minis upside down under shelves over my desks. They sound good and look cool, but I do admit our older Echo sounds better in our larger spaces. Let’s face it, none of these make me think “oh wow that sounds incredible!” And if you feel that way listening to a HomePod or and Echo, then you haven’t experienced a truly great stereo system!

Here's hoping that Apple release a HomePod mini in 2023 that includes a small screen, in the 5" range, similar to an Echo Show 5. I'd really like to get rid of the rest of my Alexa gear and this would be a big step toward making that happen.
Why wait? You can get an inexpensive iPad and lean it against an iPod Mini and viola, you have all the functionality right now… probably at a better price point! 😉

Eh. Can’t connect non Apple Bluetooth AND no Spotify support still (regardless of who’s fault). Then you have Siri but that’s hardly a good selling point, especially for the device’s market. Not for me. I have an original HomePod which has pretty great sound quality but it doesn’t get used for these reasons.

Kind of sad to have an Apple product and not even want to use it. If Siri was comparable to Alexa it might be an easier buy.

They are currently on sale at Costco for $79.99 (until 11/28/22).

I mean - to each their own, and some degree, yes, it's a matter of opinion. But it was pretty blatant to me that one was tinny and incapable of producing quality or volume at the same level as the other when I tried them side by side.

So I know its not the same thing. But there is an Otterbox Magsafe charging phone stand that lets you pivot the phone up and down to you're liking. If you download Nightstand, and Toolbox Pro (for advanced device options in shortcuts) you can set it up so that when you put your phone on the charger horizontally that the clock comes up and the screen rotates.

I have it set up so that the clock rotates, then locks the orientation to landscape, then when I remove it from the charger and hold it upright it closes the clock app and locks the orientation to portrait. I'm not a fan of the rotation being on most of the time.

I'm with you though. The sooner we get a real Echo equivalent the better :)

After using Alexa for a few years I decided to switch to Siri. The transition has been expensive however I am so happy I no longer have to hear "By the way blah blah blah" or see advertisements on my Echo screen. I'm going to set up Homebridge and create my own generic Zigbee hub to control my Hue lights and some motorized "switch flippers" for the overhead lights (I rent so smart switches are a no go) All in all I'm happy so far. I've kept both my echoes just in case. The other day I was working on something where I had to ask Alexa to set a timer (I wasn't near my phone). Every time I said "Alexa, set a timer for 30 seconds" I was wincing waiting for her to say something else after "ok, 30 sec timer starting now"

Original large HomePod was good, albeit not great, but it provided good sound. Apple needs to bring out a newer and even larger HomePod. I think there is market for it.
