Literally just brought in my 2016 MBP for the keyboard replacement, was promised it would be a week. Planned it around a trip out of town for the holiday weekend, only way I could be without it for that long.
I cannot imagine being without my primary machine for a week. I've read about people buying a macbook and returning it after theirs gets fixed.

I am confused. Are you in the USA? When you posted, it was Thanksgiving night in the states. If you literally just dropped off your MacBook at an Apple store, you are doing it on Thanksgiving or Black Friday weekend. Hardly a typical time to gauge Apple's turn around.

Don't get me wrong, I think Apple had a real nightmare on their hands with the Butterfly keyboard. But, they have taken some steps to reduce the risk (defined as probability of failure x consequence of failure) to the consumer. 1. Improved the reliability so the probability of failure has substantially dropped. 2. Provided a 4 year full replacement warranty so the cost consequence of failure has dropped. 3. Implement next day turn around at Apple stores so the inconvenience (another type of consequence) of failure has dropped. There is no such thing as zero risk, but for me, it's an acceptable risk.

Meanwhile, $799 is a heck of a deal on a great laptop. My 2019 MBA has been flawless. I would recommend it to anyone that has everyday computing requirements and loves MacOS.

I feel really bad for all those people buying this machine, because they think that this is a great deal, not realizing that 128GB is insanely small for an SSD (and not realizing that storage is not upgradable).

I've met more people than I can count who were very unhappy with their base model 128GB Mac laptop after a year or two, because they were constantly struggling not to run out of storage space.
128gb is plenty as long as you dont load it up with images or video content. 128gb is plenty for 99% percent of those that do not use their mac to create work product.

I would agree, with slight modification: 128GB is fine for most of those that do not create a lot of media work product. There are plenty of people that create documents, spreadsheets and related work products that will have plenty of space with 128GB. Generally, files from productivity apps don't use much storage.

I am in AZ, but I dropped off my MBP on the way to the airport to go to the UK; hence my disjointed posting times. I can’t be without it for literally a single day, so had to wait until I was going to be out of town to leave it for repair. It will be ready for me before I return.

Yep, that was Thanksgiving and Black Friday weekend in the US, so unfortunately, not the best time to need a repair.

If you literally can’t be without your computer for a day, you might consider some type of redundant system or backup computer. There is no computer made on planet earth that will guarantee zero downtime or that is guaranteed not to need some type of service.

People are excited about the new 16in MBP. They believe it is going to be more reliable than the 15in model with the butterfly KB. It will probably be a great computer, and I hope everyone is very happy with it. But guess what? It has been out for a few weeks and there are already numerous reported problems:

  • Screen Ghosting
  • Coil Whine
  • Hot & Noisy with external monitor
  • Uneven Trackpad
  • Speakers Cracking and Popping
  • UI Hang-up and Stuttering
I assume most of these problems will end up being no big deal. But, some folks will need to take a trip to the Apple store and might have some downtime for service. It happens. So, if you have zero tolerance for downtime, you need a redundant system. It suck. But, we live in an imperfect world with imperfect machines made by imperfect people.

I ordered one, will replace my 2015 MBA. I was happy with my old MBA that I bought it on sale too! (same price $799 four yrs ago in Bestbuy).

I use it for training, meetings and powerpoint presentations mostly, until recently on some keynotes and power points presentations got stuck.

I'm Ok with the different keyboard, I also have a Macbook Pro 2016, at the end you get used to it.
