I wonder if we'll ever get 16 GB models at retailers other than Apple? I guess it doesn't matter for now as I can use EDU pricing and get free AirPods, so these deals aren't as good as through Apple.

Don’t fall for it. In a few months there will be new models and you’ll get an extra year of shelf life on the device. It’s like the Apple Watch, yeah they are selling the Series 6 at low prices because it’ll be obsolete in two months.

I am not sure why Costco deals are not tracked, I just got my MBA with 512GB + apple care and taxes included for $1258. which represents a $200 savings combined.

Thanks for this, I always forget to check up what Costco has in store in general…

Obsolete in two months? Hardly. Although the earlier watch series were discontinued, none of the watches are in the vintage or obsolete category yet. Apple still sells the series 3. This article contains the whole list of vintage and obsolete Apple products updated as of 6/30/21. No watches appear on it.

Your Costco deals are even better when you consider the dividend you will get back later, and if the price goes down you can ask them to give you the additional discount in a refund within a certain time and you have to have bought in store for additional in store discount, or online for additional online discount. So be sure to monitor Costco prices after you buy. I just got $10 back on a $30 fan the other day they put on sale. Also sometimes Costco has better online price deals than in store, or better features like more ram than available in store purchases.

It always gives me a chuckle when people think hardware that’s been out for a year is about to be obsolete. If that were the case, why would you buy the next one knowing it’s only going to be obsolete in a year lmao

Technically speaking, obsolete as a noun is just no longer in production or supplanted, at least in the context of machinery & on dictionary terms. Since the consumer production lines (no warranty **** doesn’t count) do stop once a successor rolls through for Apple at least for MacBooks, it’s plausible the precise M1 Air in production today will be “obsolete” by next summer.

In practice fully none of you mean this when using obsolete, and I don’t see why we expect them to release the next Air by the end of 2021. Apple lags on this stuff, Macs especially but certainly some of the iPads, AirPods — regular and Pro, and various others.
The one thing they have a ****ing compulsive obsession with is naturally the cash cow, the iPhone, and bitching out on premium features of the year for the entire lineup until it’s almost too late (literally anything display related being the obvious example), and across lineup and on premium models too, until the tech is beyond mature.
Here we at least get something relatively new on the display front too….
Anyways it’s not as if the M1 Air is a weak device lol. The main issue I have is still RAM, absolutely ****ing no one should be selling laptops above $850 with ~ 8GB of RAM.

Neither product are even close to obsolete, and with the discounts are a heck of a deal. For those who don't need the latest and greatest. Or fall for the marketing that they are the latest and greatest ever...
