I never understood these "add a new line" deals.

If you're an existing customer... shouldn't you already have the number of lines you need?

Mom, dad, two kids... are you gonna add a fifth line just to get a free phone?

Did you give your kids a phone the moment they were born?

Some parents like to wait until their kid is a certain age before giving him/her a phone. Some wait until the start of their fall school term. I'm waiting until my kid starts 8th grade/is 13 years old.

Here's another scenario: 2 people on different carriers get married and want to consolidate phone plans to simplify and save money. At some point, they'll have kids (adopt?). The kid will need eventually need/want a phone.

That's when these "add a new line" deals come in handy.

I was excited when I saw the first half of this headline, I thought I could finally get my mom a new phone! She's been telling me how much she doesn't want a new phone, but with a deal like this...! Then I finished reading the headline...

I've been with Verizon Wireless since it was Bell Atlantic in the 90s, what perks do loyal customers get?
You get to keep paying Verizon pricing without any loyalty perks.

I guess that phone isn't really free if you have to pay a monthly fee for another line.
And all it does is encourage shady workarounds. You can get a new line, and eventually swap the numbers and then cancel the old line. Or do trick like port to google, and then after 30 days port the number onto the new line.

Right now you get Apple Music and Disney+ if those are things you want.

Does that really work? Surely they have fine print preventing that?
If you maintain the minimum number of lines your plan requires and if the line you cancelled doesn't have a contract or you got a phone for adding it, it will. You will lose your phone number though. You can also cancel the line before you do this.

Verizon this week is offering the 64GB iPhone SE (2020) for free when you sign up for a new line on a Verizon Unlimited plan. This offer is available only on Verizon's website and can't be acquired in stores.

@MacRumors, please fact check this one...I tried to add a line for my daughter. There was nothing on the VZ website about the deal, and the agent I chatted with said they do not offer free iPhone SE...it's still $5 per month when you "add a line".

Sprint/T-Mobile offered a deal when the 2020 iPhone SE was fresh--for upgrades, as well as new lines.

Verizon isn't doing much with this deal.

Bell Atlantic had a terrible time selling mobile phones back then, but they were a good home phone service.

The devil is in the details.

I’m looking at getting one of these for my oldest son before he starts high school. Free sounds good. The catch? Must be on the Verizon unlimited plan, which is $80/mo *per line*. Otherwise, he shares the data pool for $23 after my work discount.

So that free phone would cost me over $1200 over 2 years. Cute trick, Verizon!

The price per line is a sliding scale. At five lines it’s $30/month with autopay on debit or checking for Start Unlimited.
There’s also discounts for military, veterans, first responders, and teachers if any of your users are one of those things.

Is this only if you have one line? Because I have three iPhones all with unlimited data on the new Verizon unlimited plan and my bill is a little less than $175/mo if I don’t include the $25/mo discount for being a healthcare professional...

Also it’s worth noting that unlimited plans are expensive. This goes back to the days of subsidized phones. I’m still on a per GB plan and it would cost be $20 more a month to be unlimited. $20x24=$480 plus more if I keep my phone on unlimited.

With so many people working from home we hardly need unlimited anyways.

Are there really that many people working from home? COVID did not impact my job at all. 12 hour days wether I like it or not.

I only have the one line and the $80/mo I spend includes all my discounts.

Adding the line for $23 and buying the device outright is going to be a *lot* cheaper over the promotional period.
