I've been hovering over the 'Buy' button on an M2 Air for weeks, and now this deal poops up... I'd get the 512GB/16GB M2 Air, and this deal has the same storage and RAM for $100 cheaper. Much better multi-core performance from the MBP, a better display, better sustained performance, etc. The Air actually has better single-core performance, longer use per battery charge, lighter, smaller, and is one year newer (for 'Vintage' list purposes).

I'd be just using it for web browsing, Office apps, Netflix, and the occasional image or video project. I think it comes down to portability for me, as I do carry my laptop around 24/7 and travel with it quite a bit.

Hmmmm.Get the
Get the 14" MacBook Pro. Better in every sense and $100 cheaper to boot. It is not "OVERKILL", it is future proofing. It is not throwing money away. You will thank yourself later.
But if you still think it is too much power, then get a base M1 Air over the M2.The M2's have no real reason to exist.

I had a base M1 MBA model which I absolutely loved. Upgraded it to the base 14" M1 Pro MBP which I also love. A tad heavier but it really builds on the perfection of the M1 MBA and makes what is likely the perfect laptop. At this price its. no brainer really. You get one heck of a high performing machine that just spits out Xcode mobile app development, 4k video, stunning graphics and illustrations plus a ton more. If anyone uses a computer for any type of work this is the machine to get.

I did many of the same tasks on the base MBA as well but I love the XDR Display on the 14" plus the extra ports. In fact my work laptop is still a M1 MBA that is used for app development. Apple really hit it out of the park with Apple Silicon.

No, it's $1699 after verifying you're a student for a 10-core, 1TB 14", which is $800 off of current non-edu retail price of $2499. You have to fill this out to qualify so I doubt this price is tracked. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/find/eduRegister.jsp
You are right. I didn't pay attention to the price you quoted in your original message. I just followed the link and saw that it was discounted. And even at the price without verification, it is less than educational pricing listed on Apple's website (which is generally the best price anyone can get Apple products anywhere). So $1699 is insane!

If you don't qualify (as statedin your original post), how were you able to view that price?

It was posted on a famous deal site.

I’m in the same boat. Mighty tempted by the midnight color of the MBA, but I want something that’ll last me as long as my 2011 MBP did, and the better display of this MBP is tipping the scale in its favor. Decisions decisions…

Not that it matters, but I just picked up the discounted MBP (Best Buy has the same price, and is 5 min sites away). I handled both the M2 Air and the 14” MBP, and the display on the 14” made the decision for me!

Done. I now have a brand new 14” MBP in my grubby little paws. Thanks!

Apple's 2021 MacBook Pro lineup has seen consistent discounts over the past few weeks, but it's been rare for every model to have all-time low prices at once. Today on Amazon you'll find just that, with both 14-inch and 16-inch versions of the MacBook Pro getting record low markdowns in every configuration.

14-inch MacBook Pro

Starting with the 8-Core M1 Pro/512GB 14-inch MacBook Pro, this model is available for $1,599.00, down from $1,999.00. It's available in both Silver and Space Gray, with the latter color seeing a slight shipping delay.

The 10-core M1 Pro/1TB SSD model is on sale at $2,099.00, down from $2,499.00. This is the best price we've ever tracked on this model of the 14-inch MacBook Pro.

16-inch MacBook Pro

Secondly, you can get the 10-Core M1 Pro/512GB 16-inch MacBook Pro for $2,099.00, down from $2,499.00. This one is available in Space Gray and Silver as well.

On the higher end, the 10-Core M1 Pro/1TB 16-inch MacBook Pro is on sale for $2,299.00, down from $2,699.00. This is another record low price on the 2021 MacBook Pro, and it's available in Silver and Space Gray.

Finally, Amazon is offering a discount on the 10-Core M1 Max/1TB 16-inch MacBook Pro. You can get this model for $3,099.00, down from $3,499.00. Both colors are on sale at this price, and this is another all-time low price for the MacBook Pro.

Rumors for updated Mac mini fading?
I don't see a lot of incentive for them to upgrade the mini. It was always a low-cost tool for Apple to lure new customers to the Mac platform or give existing customers a reason to add "extra" Mac units around the house.

I think that one of the reasons M1 mini upgrade rumors were killed the first time around when the Studio was released was because of how well the M1 mini performed out of the gate. Upgrading it would have clouded and likely cannibalized pro segment sales.

The number of compulsive upgraders who went with M1 Minis are so few that it would make more sense to try and push them to the next class up (the lowest-end Mac Studio). And for what it's worth, the lowest-end Mac Studio is only $200 more than a maxed-out M1 Mac Mini, and offers a HUGE performance advantage (4 more performance cores, 16 more GPU cores, ~330GB/s more memory bandwidth, media engine, 16GB more RAM, an SD card slot, 2 more TB4 ports, support for 3 more 6k displays, and 2 additional USB-C connectors).

Hmmm. Now that I write this out, I think I'm going to sell my maxed-out M1 Mac Mini and get a low-end Studio.

B&H Photo has even better deals… up to $700 discount on some of the higher end configurations… i have a 16” M1 Max in a shopping cart that has a $600 discount, and provided the config is still available I will buy it next week when I have some funds become available… my secondary picks configuration, should the first no longer be available has a $300 discount. I got suckered into the higher end config because i basically was getting double the internal storage for no additional costs. If one can afford it, there is no better time than now to buy an M1 Pro or M1 Max equipped MacBook Pro.

My 2017 MacBook Pro has broken down and I’m looking to get another laptop. Wondering if I should wait for the m2 MacBook Pro. Have the option of the new one and/or potentially an even larger discount on the existing m1 MacBook pros ?
