I have had an TV since the 2nd edition. Had a 3rd gen which is in use by some needy folks. I bought the 4th gen earlier this year when I cut the cord. I do enjoy using my ATV4 as my primary source for streaming.
iTunes rentals, all the services (paid and free) work great for my needs. I don't have a library of discs or downloads.

I've not watched much 4k content on my Sony Bravia, just a number of YouTube videos and a few others. Don't really care for the Sony TV interface.
I've been reading with sincere interest all the issues going on with the new 4k ATV. I'm really wondering if getting the new ATV 4k is worth it for me.

I don't buy content, just rent.

Would it be worth it to upgrade ?

Personal opinion is no as it sounds like you don't view much 4k content. And you already have the 4th gen which still performs quite well compared with other streaming boxes.

If you're a Netflix subscriber or think you'll rent iTunes movies in 4k it might be more justifiable.

I agree with you about the Sony TV, the problem isn't so much Android but Sony are notorious for underpowering their TVs with dreadful processors. Android TV runs quite well on a Nvidia Shield.

I have a gift card which would pay for the majority of the cost of the new 4K ATV. So, I went ahead and ordered it today.
32GB version - about $40 my cost. Easy enough to justify that purchase ;)

I'm looking forward to watching movies in 4k !
