I've had my First-Gen Airpods for a few years now.

The right pod dies while using after like 45 minutes to an hour. Left still can go almost 2 hours. Weird since Ive never used one more than the other, I always have had both in during workouts or just casual public walking around.

My biggest concern and question is about the Pros' "squeeze" gesture. I know the 2nd Gen retains tapping controls from Gen 1, and I like how easy it is. While running or working out, to just double tap quickly to skip to the next song (I had double tap left ear to pause, and double tap right ear to skip). I've looked at a few videos and it seems the squeeze/press force gesture seems a bit more of a hassle than the ease of the double tap.

I like that the Pros have added 3 "squeezes" for backwards skip.

How annoying was it especially for any of you fitness people, to go to Gen1/2 to Pros and deal with the squeeze gesture. I know it sounds absurd to complain about it, but the double tap was sooooo easy since I prefer the longer stem of the G1/2 over the shorter stem on the Pros. The stem length wouldn't bother me as much if it was still just double tap to use controls. But it seems making each pod shorter and now forcing the user to squeeze it (based on the youtube videos i've seen), seems a pain.
 
I had both. I don't run but double tap while running is probably easier than squeezing but my double tap didn't work many times and you had to hit it in a very specific spot.

The squeezing is more accurate and works for me all the time. (but I don't run with them)

Eh. Usually when the double tap wouldn't work if I tapped it a bit harder it would work and reset so next time it would be fine. Or if it doesn't work usually if i take both ears out for a second it resets and works fine after.

How long does a double squeeze take to register for you?
 
If you are running it’s not really that easy to take out and reset etc.

The squeeze is very quick.

Hey, this isn't a response but a question. Did you run with them? If so, did they stay in pretty well under hot conditions and sweat? Thanks

I am not much of a runner. But I've played tennis in them (which is probably more likely for them to fall out because of the start stop and change of direction suddenly) and they've been fine. I've run a few minutes on a treadmill and been fine.

I use my AirPods Pro on daily runs as well and I upgraded from first-gen AirPods so I understand the OP's concerns. I loved the ease of the tapping.

But you do get used to the squeeze and it works really well.

As for staying in the ears while running, I never had a problem with the first-gen AirPods and definitely none with the Pros.

If the Apple Stores were open, I'd recommend buying the AirPods Pro and trying them. If you don't like them, just return them. I presume it would be okay, I did the same with some AirPods gen 2 (I bought them like 2 days before the Pros came out).

Personally, I don't like the AirPods Pro. The fit is different and it actually comes out of my ear when running (even with different sized tips), so I went back to using the standard AirPods for everything. The only time I'll use the AirPods Pro would be on a flight or if I had to work in a noisy cafe, neither of which I can do right now!

I really find the tap gesture to work well, I found the squeeze to be not so good.

I run in AirPods in Tokyo, so I've done plenty of >30C days with high humidity. I sweat buckets on those days and the have never fallen out because I was running.

I hike and run a lot. I returned the Pro for a few reasons. No bass. Squeezing is not nearly as easy as tapping, especially while running/hiking. Sound quality was not great for the price. I use the Airpod 2 with foam doughnut covers and they stay put all day while running/hiking and have great full bass.
