I just purchased a mid 2009 macbook pro so I can use Apple products for all my computer needs and only use my dell laptop to program my digital ham radios. That being said, my new to me mid 2009 macbook pro is only supported to El Capitan, however i see there is a patch tool that can be used to make High Sierra install on it. I am debating if I should attempt to do the patched install or leave the laptop alone running El Capitan since it is running perfect as it is. Just wondering what people's thoughts on this are?

    Let's see...
    El-Capitan running perfectly, or
a hacked version of High Sierra complete with all it's issues.
Sounds like a no-brainer to me.:)

    Go with what works.

    Question:
Does your Macbook currently have a platter-based hard drive in it, or does it have an SSD?

If it has the original HDD, the ABSOLUTE BEST upgrade of all would be to put an SSD into it, and keep using El Capitan.

NOTHING ELSE you do to it will give you as much of a boost in performance.

Go to ifixit.com to see what's involved.
If the 2009 is similar to mine (a 2010), it's easy.

The mid-2009 13" Macbook Pro actually runs the patched High Sierra quite nicely (and Sierra before it). I'm posting this from mine, a completely maxed-out MBP with 8gb of ram and SSD drive. YMMV of course.
