If WeChat actually winds up getting banned, you can still download the app by making a new Apple ID and signing into a different country’s App Store, downloading the app, and then signing back into the App Store with your default Apple ID. You don’t even need a VPN to do this.

If WeChat gets banned in the USA, likely the functionality of it will soon be crippled if not totally broken regardless of what copy you've got on your phone.
We Chat is dead (or soon to be dead) in the USA. Find something else.
