Here's a (slightly downscaled) version of the photo I took this summer that's serving as one of my Desktops this month:

FWIW, this is a 30 second exposure at ISO 1600 that was then given an couple of additional nudges during the RAW import, most noteably +1.5 stops (ie, effectively a 90 second exposure). It shows what can be done today with a dSLR. For example, all of the "blazing light" from inside the cabin is coming from one candle that we had lit inside. Probably my best photo of 2006.

Heh, I was wondering why the house wasn't completely blown out.

I figured that you did an HDR composite until I read that. That's an amazing photo, and I'm going to have to try something like that with my camera soon.

Yes, this is one image, no Photoshop fake background. We've already had that particular discussion on the MR digital photography group back in July.

The photo was taken at the Foxes Highland Lodge, which is in the southern highlands (Mufindi District) of Tanzania, in Africa.

To have an idea how far out in the boonies we were, here is its approximate location on Google Maps. Zoom out to start to find small villages.

Overall, it was a good night at a great location: a very clear night at moderate altitude (around 2000m, or ~6700ft), in an area with no nearby cities, so effectively zero light pollution to mask the night sky.
