Any recommendations? sub $200 :D Monitors would be overkill. earphone jack would be great too.

Yeah, +1 on the Z-2300s! These THX speakers review at the top of everyone's list, and can be had for a song now that they've hit clearance prices at your local retailer.

From all the reviews I read, short of stepping out of "computer speaker" zone, these really are the two "best sounding" around by general opinion (The Logitechs and the Bose)

I don't think you could go wrong with either of them... I personally liked the look of the bose more, the "feel" of the build compared to logitech, the USB connection and the sub. So I got it.

I have the Bose Companion 2 series, and they sound alright. I find the bass can be very over powering at times, and that's common with all Bose equipment.

I would never pay the MSRP ($299? What for 2.1 speakers) But I snagged them on sale for 1/2 price, which is not bad. Another reason I bought them is the space. They fit nice on the desk, especially near the ACD and they sound decent.

Those Swan M10 speakers really look nice, and I would love to hear them in action. If only we had a nice place to listen to them.

We need a section in the Apple Store for this stuff. Considering mine just opened.

If you're just playing games, then go with the computer speakers... that's what they're designed for. But if you're editing sound or just want to listein more critically then go with monitors. It's the differnce between a toy and a tool.

I'm using M-Audio BX5a's, and the difference over any or the computer type speakers I compared them to was very noticable. Including the bose and logictech.

They can be had for <$200 if you look around.

The swans are nice, but also look at Mackie's, KRK, Adam, and Alesis to name a few. Try here to get an idea:

then head off to Guitar Center for a listen.

I still like Klipschs, but they're getting harder and harder to find.

Soundsticks are great speakers too, I am thinking about selling my klipschs for them, purely because I'm bored of the way mine look lol.

I loved my klipschs. I recently sold them for more than what I paid for them and am saving for some Yamaha hs50m's or maybe even some hs80m's if the price is right. :)

I have Klipsch PM20. They're discontinued now but pop up every now and then for $40 refurb. I'm no audiophile but I think they sound great -- better than the 2.1 system they replaced.

Many responses, many answers, some very thoughtful.

If you are interested in knowing more about the range of possible choices, consider computeraudiophile.com. This is a group that is way too high end for what you asked, but looking there will give you a sense of what true fanatics think and which includes occasional affordable items.

I just got my Swan M10's in and for $100 you can't beat them. They are amazing speakers and they look so classy. :)

I only can recommend Adam Audio A5... no other computer speaker sound comes close. Unfortunately the speaker isn't cheap....

I can't believe ANYONE would recommend Bose. Worst speakers you could buy for the money.

I have the Bose Companion 5 and I think they are the best speakers around. To much money I agree. It doesn't matter what speakers you are talking about as there will always be a debate...

I'm not saying they're bad speakers, but their sound quality comparable to speakers that cost much less. For the price of Bose Companion 5's there are many studio monitors that would give you MUCH better sound. Bose is brilliant at marketing a decent product as high-end and selling it at greatly inflated prices.

I'll add my vote for the Companion 5's as well - Yes, they're overpriced (I managed to pick mine up at the CompUSA going out of business sale at a pretty good discount), but they're just about the best speakers I've heard for a home PC speaker setup.

The monitors are a lot larger though...
