30+ years of trouble free connections, now with USB C, if I breathe too hard, disconnection. I've tried several brands, all the same. Why Apple went to this I'll never know! Is anyone aware of a functional USB C cable?

Every single USB-C cable I have used, whether it's with my MBP16 or MBA, has worked perfectly fine - no issues at all. Can I suggest maybe its an issue with your laptop??

I recall a similar issue with my old Intel MBP several years back and the TB port which was very flakey - Apple replace the entire mainboard in the end. Luckily it was still covered with AppleCare.

What specifically is disconnecting, what is it being plugged into? (I would assume a MacBook since this is in the notebooks thread).

Suggest you run a diagnostics report and it may identify your problem which sounds like something internal or a defective USB-C port.

Crud in the port is a good call. You will need a cocktail stick or similar to dig out impacted lint and debris, which may prevent the cable from clicking in fully. The other thing is whether you have bent the cable at the relief point a bit too much. I have had three cables fail on me within a week. At least they are cheaper to replace than lightning cables.

I have zero issues with my USB-C cables either, and I have too many to count. Apple, Anker, Caudabe, Belkin, some random Amazon brand. They all work fine. If you think the port is loose, take it into Apple.

2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 MacBook Pro (the worst 2500 I've ever spent) Sonoma 14.5. In looking around I've found others are having the same problem.
you are referring to sudden disconnects of external storage? One possible solution for some affected, is to mount the external drive(s)/device(s) and then kill the usb demon (which is responsible for connect/disconnect/reconnect) from the terminal.

The command is sudo killall -STOP -c usbd, which pauses the process until you either reboot your Mac or enter the command sudo killall -CONT -c usbd to restart the process. This often fixes the problem.

OP:

What are you connecting TO?
One device?
Several devices?
A dock?
Something else?

You're not going to get much help with original posts like the one you put up above, because not enough information...
