Hey guys, I will be getting a 2.4 aluminum macbook for christmas along with vmware fusion 2.0. The problem is, Im not sure what to purchase between XP or Vista. I was hoping those of you with experience with BOTH could tell me the pros and cons and which to get.

If it helps, I will primarily be using Windows for Office, gaming, and maybe a few other things.

I believe it will depend on your budget.
Anyway I do prefer XP because I'm more familiar with it, and you can buy a used license for around $50~100 on eBay or Craigslist.

xp will perform better than vista when doing emulation since its not near as resource hungry

i personally like xp more but remember, xp isnt 64 bit (xp 64 bit isnt compatible with a ot of programs) so ram will be limited to 2-3 gigs if i remember right

with that said, i have both xp and vista and have xp in fusion and vista on its own hard drive

Thanks for the quick responses. It seems that XP would be the smarter way to go, but do you guys have a preference for which edition would be best suited for me?

    Thanks again.

XP is great primarily because you probably already have it. Very cost effective.

I like XP better in a virtual machine (parallels/vmware) because it runs with lower overhead, and Vista64 for boot camp because it runs the newest games and the newest design and rendering software.

    Xp

Vista is still not there. For instance, I spent 6 hours installing the OS and multiple programs before finding that one program was not compatible. It installed fine and ran fine except the graphics was screwed up in the model view - CATIA V5R19.

I then spent another 6 hours reinstalling XP Pro and checked CATIA first to see if it worked in XP. No problem whatsoever.

It may be that a new driver is needed for the late MBP 2008 9600 NVIDIA card but I tried the latest driver from NVIDIA and that did not help.

When you install, try to use a disk with SP3 slipstreamed. Save you the hassle of doing massive update downloads immediately after installing.

Agree with the other posters 100%, XP is the right choice.
