Deciphering iCloud Photos

I'm trying to figure out the whole iCloud Library thing.

So I have an iPhone, iPad, and Macbook Pro. On all of them, I turned on iCloud Photos. Somehow my iPhone & iPad have the exact same items: 345 photos & 31 Videos. Great. In Aperture, it only loads 12 photos. Shouldn't this sync up and also have 345 photos, or does it only go back a certain amount of time?
