XR. I'm actually returning my XS max in for the XR (I also had the 8 Plus). The XR is a better value for what I do. I don't really play intense games on my phone and basically web surf and that's about it. Almost every other device in my house has a better display than even the iPhone XS Max.

Also I thought the PPI would be bad but considering my iPad only as 226 and it's plenty sharp.

That may be true for many people, but I appreciate things that are nice to see and feel, it's not vanity, it's part of the experience for me.
Is it possible to enjoy newer devices without making exaggerated claims that slightly older devices look dated and old fashioned though? There are people with iPhones 8’s who may like to enjoy the experience too.

As you can tell from my earlier posts I was very sceptical about the screen quality of the Xr. I was thinking of getting a 8+. Went to the store today to see the Xr in person and I was pleasantly surprised about the clarity of the screen. So much so that I ordered a white 128 Gb. Once it has arrived, I'll play with it and will scrutinize it, compare it to my wife's 7+. If for some reason I'll change my mind, I'll return it for a full refund and get a 8+. I'll doubt that will happen though.

Well, looks like the opinion on the XR is much higher than 8+. I may need to check out an XR in person and see if I can adapt :)

Buying an 8 Plus is like burning money. What’s the point? Except for the telephoto camera or 3D Touch, why anyone even consider the 8 Plus? I don’t get it. Don’t say oh the PPI because the screen is perfectly fine. The 8 Plus is the new Macbook Air, pointless machine only existing because it’s cheaper.

- Font on the 8+ will be slightly sharper and bigger (I've read it's 6% larger), all things being equal.
- You can get a used 256G 8+ for $650. Compared to $799 for a 128G XR, it is $150 cheaper with more storage. You can use that money to get an airpod.
- Depth data on the XR's camera is not as good as the dual lens on the 8+, I've read on https://www.dpreview.com/news/09330...for-pets-objects-enabled-by-halide-developers.

Having experienced some hands-on time with the XR, I changed my vote to the 8 Plus. I like the new design of the XR but not its new aspect ratio. The fonts of my 6s are actually a little larger than the XR's. I'm sure the Plus is even more noticeable.

Why is it pointless buying an 8+? It’s a really good phone and you’re right it’s cheaper so that is attractive for people wanting a phone with great performance at a cheaper price. The two features you listed were major reasons I bought one on the 2 year contract 3 weeks ago.

What’s so wrong with the 8+???

One gets the impression that there is now too much choice and in the end, nobody is fully satisfied..
May be the good old days (when there was a single iphone) were the best!

That was ok in the days when Android was considered an inferior alternative but these days the market is so full of choice I think Apple had no choice but to water down their range with various models. I agree though the days of one model were more exciting with a lot more buzz compared to now.

I guess the Apple-love has been fractured, with opinions for and against the differing offerings.

My daughter has a 7+ and my son has a 6+. Are those probably ok to hang onto for 1 more year or worth bumping either to the XR? Or me getting the XR, pass the 8+ to daughter, and then she passes 7+ to my son. I'm real tempted to just get the $29 battery for the 6+ and make him stick it out another year.

I purchased the Xr for my son and he currently has the 6s +. I had purchased the Xs Max for myself, but returned it after he decided he wanted to just keep his 6s+. So I kept his new Xr. Friday we had a new battery put in his 6s+, purchased him a screen protector and a new case. He is happy as can be! He like the Xr, but he didn't really like the Face ID as much as Touch ID. I think it has something to do with his friends telling him you can't sneak around on the phone during class if you have to look at it to unlock it. LOL.

Hahaha....good point! And not just for kids, but also if I want to play a game during a boring work meeting below the table ;)

I think if I can get past my Face ID hang up, I'd move towards an XR. Just so used to the Touch ID. And heck, I see that even the brand new MacBook Air has Touch ID instead of Face ID (but the new iPad has Face ID). Can't Apple make up their mind???

There's nothing wrong with the 8 Plus, his post was stupid. If it suits your needs then spending more on another phone would be burning money. It's a great phone with a great processor that will be viable long after your 2 year contract expires. Enjoy your phone and try to ignore the stupid things said here. It happens a lot. There seems to be a few that think year old tech is useless and shouldn't be considered when they're obviously quite wrong.

In your situation, I would keep the present phones and invest in $29 batteries (all your phones are eligible). After all, your son still has a headphone jack.

FWIW I was REALLY hung up on my Touch ID and not wanting to make a change, but I’m really loving the Face ID on my XR. It’s really fast.

The 8 Plus becomes a poor value, as for only $50 more, you get the XR with the latest A12 and longer support. Apple truly targeted the XR to replace the 8 Plus. Once you’re used to the larger screen, the traditional bezels will feel archaic.

The one that still holds great value is the regular iPhone 8, as it is significantly cheaper than the XR, and smaller physically (for those who prefer smaller phones).

The trade offs for the 8 Plus just to save $50 is not worth it imo. And let’s not compare used prices, since I can argue further that a used 7 Plus is better than the 8 Plus as it is even cheaper while maintaining most of the features like Touch ID, dual lens, and ip67.

I felt the opposite as both devices have aspects that are better than the other. If the XR was aimed to replace the 8+ then they wouldn’t be selling them side by side quite simply.

Which ever iPhone you choose from these two you are going to get a great device. I chose the 8+ but everybody is different. I’m also very fortunate as the classic bezel design doesn’t look ‘outdated’, or ‘archaic’ to me or people I know generally. It’s obvious I couldn’t pull it out at a Mac Rumours party though lol, but what are the chances.

A MacRumours party, good lord I can just picture it. It would end in tears. :D

Apple is selling a 2015 Macbook Air for $999, and a 2018 retina Macbook Air for just $200 more. It is obvious which product Apple nudges customers to buy. The same with the iPhone 8 Plus and the XR, as they keep mentioning the 8 Plus as a comparison on their website and in the keynote, and only put $50 price difference between the two.

There is still a market for both models otherwise they wouldn’t waste manufacturing capacity making the 8+ and pip it so close in price. It’s a good iPhone still still has appeal and I don’t know why some of you seem so negative about it.

I think I've said this, but both are value-packed phones and you won't go wrong with either. I chose the XR and am very pleased with it. One really needs to go to a store and spend some quality time comparing the two.
