Congrats on your new iMac purchase! I just bought a new 27" with the i7, 780m, and 1 TB Fusion drive. It'll be replacing my mid 2010 27" with an i3.

A few months back, I upgraded laptops from my 2007 15" MBP to an 11" MBA. If you want high portability, but to still have an actual computer, I highly recommend the 11" MBA. It might sound funny, but it's the perfect complement to the 27" iMac. It doesn't feel weird to use the small screen, either. A tablet can be a great tool, too (I prefer Android for mobile, but pretty much the same). But when I need to show a client a video project in progress, whipping out the little MBA is easy. Or just to copy footage from SD cards or hard drives. The list goes on.

If you do go the iPad route, remember that you can use a remote desktop program to access your iMac. I use Splashtop.

I'd say RAID 10 is better if you have it.

I won't need the speed of the RAID 0 in that. The RAID 1 will simply be for archiving video projects once I'm finished editing them.

Maybe I'll get an 11" air when the broadwell models roll out.

Congratulations on your purchase. Why did you decide on fusion vs the full SSD.

Thanks for the reply! I actually ended up ordering my iMac yesterday. You think that my box will have a ML picture on it? Because if so, I will be greatly disappointed.

If it's a CTO, then you might get it with Mavericks in tow. Had you waited, your chances would be improved. Otherwise, if it is a standard model, odds are they'll still have Mountain Lion for a few more weeks.

Also, what do you think about my data management backup solution posted above?

A little bit on the needlessly complex side, but so it goes. You won't be able to have both a bootable Windows partition and a bootable Mac partition on the same non-Boot-Camp drive; so if you make those two different drives, that would be smoother.

It stills says processing order even though I placed it on Monday. It hasn't even shipped yet. Do you think my chances are higher or would it have required a few more weeks?

Ah, very good point. Any other suggestions that would be less complex?

It's a good point, but for $3000.00 I just got a pretty beastly iMac vs the rMBP.

It's more than just cost. Portability, Flexabiltiy and Semi Future Proof.
If you would have made this choice the first time you would be on a brand new rMBP and already have a the 27 in screen.

Or maybe some day your company gives you a windows laptop. Well you would have a great screen to work with.

Bottom line is the rMBP is a great machine and its very nice to sit in bed or on the patio and still have the option of a big screen if needed.

And I know the IPAD is for the patio/bed thing but there are times when an IPAD just ain't enough.

The cost, well the folks at apple gotta eat to, so it will help'em.

Like I said, I'll probably just buy an 11" Broadwell Air when it's released. More portable and then I retain my power of the iMac buy not sacrificing it simply for portability.

By now, odds are probably in your favor. Hard to tell though. Do let us know what it ends up coming with, because I'm sure that info will be useful.

Get two external drives; one for all your Windows needs (whether you need it bootable or not) and one for all your Mac needs (whether you need it bootable or not). You have 4 USB 3.0 and 2 Thunderbolt ports, plus some drives will even allow for daisy chaining, so it's not like you're going to run out of expansion. Plus, you're dealing with a desktop, so the added amount of external things is sort of moot when you're not dealing with something that's portable to begin with! But still, if you'd prefer to minimize on space; just buy two of a stack-able external; that way you can stack two drives literally on top of each other while only taking up the footprint of a single drive.

It came on 11/09/13 preinstalled with Mountain Lion and a ML box as well

Here's some more info in this thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1666781/

I want to go RAID 1. One of my externals was just tested with multiple bad sectors.. Oh I hate the spinning disks..
