"iPhone SDK for iPhone OS 3.0 beta is for development use only. This new version should only be deployed on devices dedicated for iPhone OS 3.0 beta software development and cannot be used for submitting iPhone OS 2.2.1 applications."

I want to start 3.0 development, but continue 2.2.1 dev. Does this mean I need 2 macs? Do I also need 2 iphones/ipods for testing (one with 2.2.1, one with 3.0)?

You can chose which SDK you compile for in Xcode so different projects can target different SDKs. As for the device thing - yes it's probably safest to have a separate 3.0 beta device but probably not necessary. I compile my shipping app to run under SDK 2.0 but the iPod Touch I test on is running 2.2.1.
