google apps allow external links to open in chrome so it should be a easy inplementation for 3rd party apps, yet apple still forcing safari on everyone even though it's a poor browser.

when can we expect this to change? it's been 10 years now.

Safari is the default browser that is built into iOS. Various apps can give options to open in other browses as you mentioned. No one really knows when or even if Apple will change anything related to default apps and ability to set other apps as default. Given that they just now started allowing for removal of some default apps, perhaps something like that might happen in the future.

I use iCab Mobile, which offers a share sheet extension to make it easier to open links in the app. But I agree, I wish I could make it truly the default browser.

If you have certain apps you use a lot, beg and plead the developer to offer a browser option.

You call Safari weak but you want to default to the maximum surveillance browser there is?

"yet apple still forcing safari on everyone" - Apple is not "forcing" anything. You should be glad Apple allows you to use a 3rd party browser to begin with considering they have full control over the software and can do as they please without your approval. See iOS EULA for more information.

"it's a poor browser" - You are entitled to your opinion.

"when can we expect this to change? it's been 10 years now." -

It's been 10 years and not enough users have complained enough about changing default apps for Apple to even consider it so don't expect a change any time soon.

Do you really think there are people here who a) can, or b) will answer that question reliably?

On the other hand, if you're not really looking for answers, and in stead just posting for the sake of it then that's another story.

And who is the "we" you speak of?

We can delete some stock apps in iOS 10, so you never know what may come. But it seems unlikely to happen anytime soon.

I do hope this option will soon be there to choose your preferred app for certain basic things like:
    - E-mail app (open e.g. third party e-mail app such as Spark or Airmail) for e.g. mailto: on a website
    - Webbrowser
    - Calendar (e.g. WeekCalendar)
    - Navigation (e.g. Navmii or Google Maps)

There is this Opener app but I haven't tested it much and there is ofcourse the Share Sheet to use in certain situations to select you preferred app.
