I've got a Mac running OS X 10.8 and whenever I try to select OpenOffice as the default program to open .doc files (I go into "Get Info" on a doc file) it instantly switches back to text edit... This is rather frustrating. Anyone know what is causing this?

Stupid question, but did you click the Change All button?

I know how to chnage the default app with the "Change All" button. My problem though is before this step. When I select the app I want to use. And it switches back to text edit instantly. I just can't select OpenOffice.

Try completely quitting TextEdit and any other app that may have your doc open. Then use Finder, right click on the file, Get Info, and use the "Open with:" section in Get Info to select OpenOffice, select Change All, then close the Get Info window. Then double click on the file in Finder.

    Hopefully that will work.

By the way, for your information what worked was updating OpenOffice to the latest version. Seems to have been a very strange bug of the previous version...
