My original Apple folio from 2018 did that with very little use. It also started to reveal a sort of basket weave under the surface. The local Apple Store replaced it, with some reluctance. Of course we can’t just drop in at the Apple Store these days. I truly wished Apple would have somehow prevented this issue.

I now have the new Magic Keyboard. I wonder and worry about how the palm rests, to the left and right of the trackpad will hold up with use?

My biggest hesitation in picking one of these up is my concern that it will be looking like a bald tire within a year 😐

My 11” Magic Keyboard has the same issue. I ordered a replacement because I expect this to have better quality for The money.

It really does make Apple’s decision to use the same material as the Smart Keybaord Folio even more inexplicable. It reminds me of their persisntece with the butterfly keyboards for years. It seems very shortsighted as they set themselves up for a situation where lots of people will be making returns.

same here—but not enough to return it, compared to other products this exceeds all others.

Apples choice in external materials have been such a disappointment. My 3 day old Magic Keyboard is already looking worn down and its making me worry about long term durability.

Same issue and I’ve only had it for 4 days.
Really unfortunate considering how much I spent on it. It’s right next to the trackpad.
already called up Apple for a replacement.

Yep, got mine today and it’s perfect but given my experience with the Folio I have no doubt it will start to look awful after a few months. Shame, it’s such a nice typing experience, and the trackpad, whilst small, is lovely.

Yowza, my original had bubbles in it but my replacement is actually worse! The replacement came with torn cloth under the hinge and a scraped-up side and seam!

Similar thing happened to me. My original one had a number of indentations on the keyboard side and small bubbles on the top cover. The replacement had even more in the exact same places. Makes me think that most of them are actually defective and that the people who say theirs are perfect just aren’t that observant. Both of mine look fine at first glance under normal indoor lighting but when seen in the sun or under a flashlight it becomes immediately noticeable.

If more & more people start reporting this then hopefully it will get covered on the front page by MacRumors etc.

Here's a picture of the main problem with my original case. There is a similar indentation on the left side as well. The replacement case has almost identical indentations in the same locations.

Logan that one seems manageable. Of course it’s still ridiculous but I’d definitely keep that one over some of the others I’ve seen.

presumably we can swap these when the stores reopen?

Yeah it’s defiantly not that bad and I’m not going to return it but if Apple is willing to replace it I won’t stop them.

Yes, it’s odd that they chose the same material as the SKF. My SKF got wrinkly right where I grab it with my fingers after a few months of use. I got it replaced at the Apple Store after arguing a little with them (“not normal wear and tear after just a few months use”). Now I have my SKF covered with some stickers, which prevents it from bubbling up. I just imagine that after a few months of use the surfaces next to the trackpad will look terrible on the MK.

Got my 12.9“ Magic Keyboard this afternoon and looked over it thoroughly. I’ve had these arrive with imperfections on my 9.7, 10.5, and 11 inch iPad Pros, usually in the form of a very minor bubble or inconsistencies around the edges. This one that I got today is absolutely perfect—I’m very impressed.

I had trouble like that on my Smart Cover for the iPad 12.9”. I determined that the issue is water. If the case gets at all wet and water stays on it for even a short time, the case will bubble. I now am very careful about putting it down on a surface that is at all wet - especially in the kitchen. The moisture from my hands even caused issues if I don’t wipe it down.

Nonsense. You have no factual basis for extrapolating about "most" of these MKBs, and certainly have no basis for saying that people who report they have no problem "just aren't that observant."

I got mine yesterday and it had small bubbling on the outside and a larger defect on the right hand edge of the keyboard palm rest. Took it back to the Apple Store today, they agreed it was no good but the replacement was worse. Opened up two more which were also no good before deciding the original one was the best of the lot and keeping it. Both the display models in the store also had similar defects. It’s a bit disappointing given the price of these keyboards but not sure what I can do at this point.

You could always, you know, not buy it. ;)
