The guide is now updated with instructions to use the official update from the iPhone Dev Team instead of NateTrue's premature release. If you already updated to NateTrue's jailbroken 1.1.3, please see the message in "BEFORE YOU START."
Sorry, it took so long - even Demis get tired of jailbreaking after about 8 hours.
Just a quick note: I preserved the lockdownd fix in "Post-jailbreaking" because, at least for me, the version of iPhone Dev Team's jailbreak that isn't supposed to mess with lockdownd didn't work for me right off the bat.
after I finished running INdependence my iPhone started saying:
Incorrect SIM Insert an unlocked and valid SIM to activate iPhone
What do I do?

Just keep plugging away at it. I had that too. Ignore it & don't worry.
Okay so I'm on a mac (intel), I've already jailbroken 1.1.2, and I get to the step where you type "sh install.sh", but it says something about not being able to do something (sorry, I accidentally closed the program), and then when I tried to do the process over again, I couldn't even get past step 1. Please help?
Sorry lucror, I guess I shouldn't make changes late at night any more. That'll be fixed in a sec.
Thanks for that - the command now runs fine, Installer still crashes immediately though when run.. During the early stages, when in Installer I noticed that there was an Installer update... Should I have updated it at this point?

It crashes immediately, or just when you try to install something? The jailbreak has a copy of the new Installer.app in those files that you copy over that its supposed to make sure and replace the old one with.
say i wanted to stay jailbroken in 1.1.2 how do i get a network signal and will it not work if i have the 1.1.3 baseband????
It crashes immediatelly - The app opens briefly and I see the Installer app title bar, then before any sources are loaded it closes itself.
I'm about to start the process again, partially to get my backup restored correctly, and partially to have another go and see if I did anything wrong.
I'll repost once it's complete.

Guys,
I went to install OpenSSH (I was using the Jailbreak.jar install before) after a BSD SubSystem re-install and the installation crashed half-way through. I now can't SSH into the iPhone and Installer starts and then immediately crashes. Any helpful hints before I start the whole process again?
BTW: Be sure to apply the permissions to Installer ASAP!

I've seen this "permissions" thing re installer here & there.... Such as here

I'm not sure what it does/helps. Do we need to do this and what gain is there?
