So I, like many others, get a kernel panic almost every time i launch dvd player. I've set the preferences on the DVD player not to launch when I insert a DVD but yet it still launches and I still crash. Would there be any negatives to just uninstalling the DVD player that comes with Leopard and use VLC for my DVD playback?

If you want to disable the dvd player. You have to disable it through your MAIN system preferences. In the hardware section go to CD's DVD's,. You should see a option on were it asks you, what to do when different kind of disks are inserted.
