I have an external drive with the iTunes Library on it. Everything is checked to let iTunes manage and compile all the files.

The problem I am having is when I try to delete duplicate or any files. I select the file (from the main Library, not a play list), press delete. I get a pop up that says the song will not be available for playlists or iPods and asks if I am sure I want to delete it. It seems that the older version of iTunes asked if you want to delete it from your Library.

In any event, this process does not delete the song from the main library, just the display of the library.

Can someone please let me know what I am doing wrong?

Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Are you using a Mac or a PC? Either way, it should merely be a matter of selecting the song and pressing DELETE. If the song is selected in a playlist then you might want to press OPTION-DELETE (or ALT-DELETE on a PC). Either way, it should show you the warning box before removing the actual file. If you're using the keyboard, is there a chance you're flying past this warning by pressing RETURN/ENTER too many times? :)
