Deleting a contact email on iCloud

So as I understand it, years ago when you created an apple ID you had start with a third party email. Is it still this way? I'm not sure but any way, my ID is an email for a domain I own e.g. my iCloud account is associated to "john.smith@thesmiths.com" or similar. I'm planning to draw down this domain which means all those email addresses will no longer be accessible. How do I delete that email and must I have a 3rd party email or can I just have my john.smith@icloud.com email?
