Deleting files from downloads folder?

(I have searched about this, but haven't exactly found what I am looking for):

Once I have downloaded and installed an app, and it appears in my apps folder, can I delete it from my downloads folder (in Finder)? i.e., is what remains in Finder a duplicate?

You can safely delete those files (.dmg, .iso, .zip, ...) if you installed the applications.

In some cases, yes, it's a copy. In others, no, it's an installer. The "real" deal is an application.
